Last chance to RSVP for Saturday!! If you plan on attending we need to know by this WED 10/10, and we can make arrangements for you to pay at the door! See you at Hennesseys Fri eve!

Hey Val, I know I don't post too often, but I DO "watch" most every day. Does that make me some sort of voyeur? Anyway, Judi Barker-Murphy sent me some pics from the reunion, so I'll e-mail her and ask if she'll send 'em to you.

chums, you're both right, it was a lake.late hours and too much BL time startin' to catch up with me. As far as the joint snake, I think that was something that got you transferred to West (or so I've heard). No, I definitely remember Swendemann, who, at his most frenzied would be hard-pressed to match the charisma of a sleeping Mr. Patato Head, cupping his mouth and making an expressive "O", calling "Here hoop-snake, here hoop-snake!" Whereopon, he described the wall-rattling resolution of the pivotal moment. However, even here, I could be in error. My attention was more splintered than spanned, especially when distracted by the bust of Nefretitti (an artifact that has insprired more than one regrettable attempt to embrace all things dark and lovely, I might add). The salient point to make about Schwendemann (to use the appropriately adoloscent tone of adulation and disdain), is the fact that he not only elevated your awareness of the world of ideas, but he made the classical world seem so enticing. The fact that his hobbies of woodworking and book collecting were the fodder of several teenage speculations about what he was really up to, and the picture's complete. Even today, he'd still work in the classroom, and that list is getting shorter all the time. Final questions: What was S's room number? Is "Bebe" "ditto's" writ large? Why so few faculty members on the faculty directory (don't worry-all grudges are forgotten).

jmg, FONFLMAO!!!!!!! Geeze, I loved that story. I told my wife that story and she had a hard time beleiving that I didn't make it up. Now I have it in print, sort of. I think I remember it being told both ways; runway and over some lake. WHO CARES!!! Still and always will be funny. Some of the stories are a bit of a fog to me so PLEASE write any story of MR. Schendemann that you can remember. BIG TIME THANKS in advance.
From: johndalton (82) on Fri Oct 5 23:02:43 2001
heard pretty much the same story, except that he bounced around on a lake instead. had that man all 4 years. i loved him. remember the 'joint snake' story
From: jmq (80) on Fri Oct 5 22:54:21 2001
Re: Schwendemann As long as we're reminiscing, one of the best Schendemann stories centered on his alleged days in the service. It seems he was a crew member on a bomber when he accidently fell out of the bomb bay doors during a mission. The doors closed just as he was falling out of the plane, fortunately closing on a sturdy button on his shirt. Somehow his disappearance went inexplicably unnoticed by the rest of the crew, and the future Spartan staff member hung precariously by a button as the plane flew back to the airport. Just as the plane was set to touch down, thereby effectively ending the brief flying career of Mr. S, the button tore loose. In another remarkable display of resiliency, the future malox king fell from the plane, and dropped to the runway at precisely the right angle to allow him to roll at breakneak speed. In fact, he rolled all the way to his barracks, up the steps, and right on his bed, which is just where he was discovered by his astonished crewmates. The story loses something in the paraphrase, but it has stayed with me just as distinctly as the smell of his four-a-day cigars(the smoke-filled faculty room only partially obscured the hint of scandalous wild life of our esteemed teachers). Next time, if anyone cares...the story of the hoop snake.

Pam- You said Sunnie. Sunnie Pulvers?
From: Carl Freeman (1982) on Fri Oct 5 18:16:00 2001
Speaking of teachers - Schwendeman was a remarkable teacher, as well as a great man. Long after I had left South, I used to come and visit him, and he used to let me sit in with his classes anytime I wanted. He always referred to me as the "Wanderer", because even while attending, I would skip classes just to go sit in with him, and he never got mad, or reported me to the office. Great guy.
From: VBA (81) on Fri Oct 5 17:16:45 2001
Aw, Pam! You missed a great party! We had a blast. A bunch of us went to dinner at El Torito Friday night, then back to the hotel where we found a pit group and sat and laughed. Then Saturday was the reunion, which was great, but formal. On Sunday we had a picnic.. it was a blast. I'm hoping someone will send in some pictures from the reunion itself (Rich? Ahem?) cause I lost my roll of film! :(
From: Pam (81) on Fri Oct 5 13:16:10 2001
No, I was unable to make it to the reunion so I missed everyone. I have to say that out of all the photos that I have seen so far, everyone looks great! Better than before!
From: VBA (81) on Fri Oct 5 12:38:36 2001
Did you go to the reunion but miss me Jamy and Ricky? Do we all look different to you? I told Rick he walked out of my yearbook and into the reunion.. Jamy, on the otherhand, I had to send Lucy Folia home for her yearbooks cause I looked at him and drew a blank. DUH!! heheheh
From: Pam (81) on Fri Oct 5 11:54:44 2001
Yes, thank you and I just checked out the photos. What a trip!
From: VBA (81) on Fri Oct 5 11:31:54 2001
Scaryanne is still a sweetie. Did you get my email?
From: Pam (81) on Fri Oct 5 10:51:45 2001
VBA:Marianne Tardaguila! Now that name brought a smile to my face as she was always such a sweetie pie. Yes, do email me the photos, please as I would love to see them. I will pull out the ole annuals as my curiosity wants to know who we had class together with. I know we did...I am almost positive
From: VBA (81) on Fri Oct 5 10:38:40 2001
Hey Lady- Nope, not DiBiasi. I don't even know who that is! (Although the name rings a bell..) We should look at yearbooks and try to figure out what teachers we had.. and I'll email you photos of Jamy and Ricky, who are both still gorgeous and sweet. I had a really big and eclectic circleof friends, but some of the closest (during HS anyway) were Joey Satery, Marinne Tardaguila, Peggy Hughes, Kerry Rider, Graham Healy, Greg Burman (I wish I knew where HE went!) Steve Lund (still my best friend) geeze.. I could go on and on...
From: Pam (hortons@peoplepc.com) on Fri Oct 5 09:51:12 2001
No we did not go to the sewage plant. I do not remember any field trips with his class. Are you sure it was not DiBiasi's class that we shared together? Oh, had Mrs. Johnson for French and what was the name of the art teacher that was so cool? I remember Eric Mayol (cutie pie) in art class. I would have loved to see Ricky and Jamy again...it has been many moons! Who were your buds?
From: VBA (81) on Fri Oct 5 09:25:22 2001
Hey Pam! O.k... well...Carr... was that Oceanography? Did you go on the field trip to the Hyperion Sewage Treatment Plant?? hahah! Lynne Stevenson and I were the antithesis of friends, I'm afraid. Old water under the bridge, but lets just say in HS she was at the bottom of my list. That might have been a stumbling block for you and I! :D I knew Tom Oliveras at WaLteria, but not at SHS..I don't remember Brittney and Colleen.. but I DID know Wendy, and Cavin was a friend. (and, I might add, one of the highlights of the reunion. He, Jamy Johston and Ricky Lamson had me laughing my tukas off) I'm so sorry we didn't get to know eachother better... (And I know who the Doggie is, but have been sworn to secrecy! Arrggh! Men are so madening!) hehehh
From: Pam (81) on Fri Oct 5 08:58:45 2001
Does anyone remember Patti Waters (class of 79) ? My husband is an elementary school teacher and we hold the annual end of the year party at our house. To make a long story short... after a few libations and sitting around the bonfire, Patti (who is also a teacher) and I get to talking about where we grew up, etc. Come to find out, she grew up in the Hollywood Riviera too. Amazing that we never new each other when we lived down South and now that we are on the Central Coast we meet! What a great person she is !
From: Pam (81) on Fri Oct 5 08:50:35 2001
Good morning! Wahoo...the Kings tied last night! VBA, Now I am having a hard time remembering who some of my teachers were. Hmmmmmmmmmm, wonder why? I definitely remember Busia, DiBiasi, Sweet, Carr, Wickstrom, Saat, & Swiesinger. I hung out with Lynne Stevenson & Teri Baily my freshman year and then Brittany McAlpin, Colleen Burke, Tom Ollivares, etc my Sophmore-Junior year and then Wendy, Yventte, Sunnie, Lynne, Cav, Mike D, Mike M, Jeff P, Danielle , etc...my senior year. Somewhere in there were the Rucks sisters, the Thompson sisters, etc. A broad spectrum of great people! Who did you hang with? Hey, do you remember maybe being in DiBiasi's together (Michelle Burwell and I sat next to each other) ? Has the mystery been solved as to who exactly is RDOG?
From: VBA (81) on Fri Oct 5 05:54:59 2001
Hey Doggie~ I had Schwendeman for Ancient History Honors in 9th grade. He cracked me up! Did he tell your class his favorite story? I wish I could remember it.. something about a monkey. He'd start it the first week, and not tell the end til the last day.

JMQ-Hi! I saw the SHS Drill Team practicing this past summer, and they seemed pretty typical. The kids today have different "methods" I guess, because my son's HS rah rahs are the same and so were my daughters. I guess that huge level of enthusiams is waning.

From: RDOG (80) on Thu Oct 4 23:06:27 2001
VBA, Schwendeman was the best. Had him for Western Civ my freshman year. Anyone know what ever became of Jackman? Not alot of fond memories from that class. LATE!
From: jmq (80) on Thu Oct 4 22:06:37 2001
well, gee. without name calling, profanity, or incivility, i'm not sure if can even leave a message! nevertheless, let's confound the foundation by taliking about the decidedly square SHS on the roundtable. I attended a spartan home game last year and was immediately reminded of how icy cold spartan stadium can be in the fall. without wanting to malign what are undoubtedly nice kids, I was a little disappointed by how dull the spirt squad/band routine had become. I know nostalgia sours the present as sure as K-1 bums out a good time, but there must be some soul outside the gridioron. whats more, they didn't sell spartan cushions for my better half to recline (i was alone).
From: VBA (81) on Thu Oct 4 20:26:12 2001
Hey Pam! I've missed you! We haven't proceeded with anything on a 25 year, because, well.. I think cause it's still almost 5 years away. I'd like gto have a picnic this summer, maybe in conjunction with the Class of 1982's picnic. Fun stuff. As far as classes go, I'm think for some reason that we may have had a history class of some kind together? I have Busia, Granada, Schwendeman and oh heck... I forget who taught economics in our senior year.. I think he was cute. Ha! Leave it to me to remember that! Did you have any of those guys? Who did you hang out with? I think I missed out by not knowing you! We could have had fun! :)

VBA, I'm here...not as often tho as my life has been consumed with my sons hockey schedule, school, skateboarding, LA Kings hockey, etc...Mind you, I am loving every minute of it and would not change it for the world. I have been lurking every now and then!! What is the latest on the 25 year reunion, if anything has transpired that is. VBA, were we in a class or classes together?
From: VBA (81) on Thu Oct 4 13:56:09 2001

Zack, I understand and agree with your feelings on discussing religion on a page you feel is for "alumni hunting." I too have a sore spot when religion and schooling are mixed. So... Any Hillside/South High alumni out there? I really enjoyed the 20 year reunion in July, and part of that enjoyment was seeing people that I grew up with from kindergarten on. I'm trying to build an "alumni xmas card list", so anyone interested please send me an e-mail. How's that Zack?
From: carol (1978) on Thu Oct 4 11:20:03 2001

Zack: You sure are rambling buddy! Your last post doesn't really make sense. And I believe the name you are referring to is Rocko - not Rosko. Listen - you just go to the Roundtable and MYOB - don't be so overly concerned about what others are up to, it obvioulsy upsets you and you aren't coherent any longer.
From: Bill S (81) on Wed Oct 3 14:21:36 2001
Zack, by your criteria you last two post should not be on this board. Why continue. If you had let it drop, then this board would be clear of all of this clutter, the way you like it.
From: Zack () on Wed Oct 3 14:11:39 2001
example - religiong was brought up on this board by Rosko and then was argued about, now a SHS student c/o 2002 who came on here to observe what other people were posting had to say gets overwhelemed with discussions of religion when religion and the school system are supposed to be seperate entities. They didn't ask for that they were just looking for friends (which did post there, the post just went unread because u and Rosko have issues with religion and war.
From: Zack () on Wed Oct 3 14:08:33 2001
no. This board remains a bullitein board for SHS alums to contact eachother and post information about things relevant to South High, Torrance or a faculty member/ ex-student issue directly. The Roundtable is for all other issues (like ones in Afghanistan and New York). The length of the topic is no matter it's the subject that's the issue. So when deciding to post @ southhigh.com decide where your post belongs and post accordingly but use the criteria listed above and you wont recieve criticsm based on anything else but the topic of your message by posters who feel one way or another about it.
From: VBA (81) on Wed Oct 3 14:05:13 2001
Happy Birthday, Ashley!! P.S. Your 30s are a lot more fun!! ::hugs::
From: Ashley (92) on Wed Oct 3 12:45:38 2001
I CAN'T BELIEVE I MADE IT TO 27!!!! Today is my birthday and I am amazed how time flies and the times in your life that you thought were the WORST were only practice sesions for the real trials....your late twenties. :)
From: VBA (81) on Tue Oct 2 13:41:29 2001
I don't know exactly, but I do know that a national tragedy and impending war certainly wouldn't fall under the heading of the other topics that caused you such grief when we discussed them here. They were trivial matters that generated large amounts of posts on a daily basis, correct? So in order to be a participant in those discussions, one needs to commit to spending a portion of each day on shs.com or he misses the boat, so to speak. But that should not mean that an occasional poster like my old friend Beth (who's defense of my cheeks was much appreciated! ha!) should not be able to come here and talk to alums about something as important as this if she so desires. I rather saw that as the distinction, I suppose, even if Byon didn't spell it out as such, and I suppose I rather assumed that was your point as well... there is now a board for daily hashing, and a board for messages to linger longer.. Doesn't that seem to make sense and be fair?
From: Zack () on Tue Oct 2 09:49:17 2001
What's the distinction then?
From: VBA (81) on Tue Oct 2 09:32:24 2001
Zack, I like the way you presented that. You were clear this time and your post contained no rancor or sarcasm. I understand what you would prefer, however the tragedy of 9/11 is applicable to all Americans. It is a rather unusual circumstance to be sure. While Byon set up the round table so we could squawk about topics that will never be resolved like religion, politics and Rosie O'Donnel's sexual preference (ha!) he never said what defined appropriate topics HERE, except to say that they should be applicable to all. Clearly, as is notated by public opinion, 9/11 is indeed applicable. Never fear, we still love the Roundtable and will continue to beat on eachother over there too.
From: Ashley (92) on Tue Oct 2 09:13:15 2001
OH PLEASE!! EVERYONE IS SO SENSITIVE! Sometimes people say things JUST to get a reaction. I know...I have brothers. Go SHS Spartans. BTW were there any Alumni who were lost? Does anyone know?
From: Zack () on Mon Oct 1 23:37:22 2001
why does it need to be spoken of on both boards? I like this board clean.
From: Beth (81) on Mon Oct 1 23:27:28 2001
Thank you Carol, Val, & Another Bill. Have a Nice Day! :)
From: Another Bill from 68 (68) on Mon Oct 1 10:32:03 2001

From: carol (1978) on Sun Sep 30 16:01:24 2001
Zack: certain messages are applicable here as well as the roundtable. The WTC nightmare is applicable to us all wherever we are. The 'old' roundtable discussions I have seen have to do with general personal beliefs about the world, economy, etc. We all know that politics and religion make for very volitale discussions, so I think it was wise of Byon to create the Roundtable for those never-solved issues. But the WTC and the state of uncertainy right now makes all of us want to dicsuss matters with anyone and all. On the Roundtable or here. Be open to these discussions and tolerant of the need for people to have an outlet. Don't be a bully. And practice what you preach. If there is to be no name calling on this page, why the reference to "fat cheeks" ?? come on, grow up.
From: Zack () on Sun Sep 30 14:50:47 2001
It's not applicable to all SHS allumni there is a Roundtable page for ongoing discussions on other topics. (Like ones outside of Torrance, the WTC 9-11 emergency missed call.) Beth if u wish to insult me further please do it on the roundtable.
From: Beth (81) on Sun Sep 30 13:09:08 2001
Jeez Zack, you always seem to be the one to start the name calling, then get irked when someone reciprocates. Lighten up, Francis! And while you're at it - GROW UP!!! If anyone's got "fat cheeks" around here it's ME, not VBA! Watch your name callin',and spouting about things you know nothing about.
From: VBA (81) on Sun Sep 30 07:12:50 2001
Zack's new title: SHS.com hall monitor. If the tragedy of Sept 11th isn't applicable to SHS Alums, I don't know what is. Instead of shootin' off, why don't you just go post on the roundtable?
From: Zack () on Sat Sep 29 22:50:32 2001
Read Above. /\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\Note the line that starts with PLEASE.... also note the word applicable and it's context... Lord Byon has spoken Welcome the the South High School Alumni Message Board. Feel free to read the messages, or leave one for your fellow alumni. Please keep messages relatively short, and on topics applicable to SHS Alumni. There is a Roundtable Page for ongoing discussions on other topics. Please keep messages civil, and free of profanity. Enjoy!
From: VBA (81) on Sat Sep 29 14:22:59 2001
If I HAD "fat cheeks", I could move them, but since I don't, I will discuss whatever I like, wherever I like, until BYON says otherwise. You should keep your big cake hole shut.
From: Zack () on Sat Sep 29 11:50:14 2001

Rocko, you are not alone in the proposal that Capitalism and that fact that Americans generally possess more wealth on average than most nations in this world are partially to blame for the tragic events of late. Even the poverty stricken members of American society live better, on average, than just about any other country in the world. There are many reasons why I think this idea is absurd, and most of them have been posted on the round table page, (shouldn't this topic be transferred there?) so i'll spare a lengthy essay on this page. I'll only say that Capitalism is one of the many mechanisms that enables all of us to live the American dream. Anyone, regardless of ethnic origin, political views, religious belief, and class can become whatever they wish to be. They simply have to want it bad enough to work for it. God bless America.
From: VBA (81 ) on Thu Sep 27 20:18:06 2001
Religion has nothing to do with what happened, Rocko. Osama and his motley crew don't follow any real religion. They've concocted a set of guidelines that has nothing to do with Islam. They hate hate hate. No religion endorses hate. I'll let Perry keep the ball on your capitalism mention, but on religion, I can tell tell you 100%, is not behind this. Blaming this on Islam is like blaming Hilter's regime on Christianity. It just doesn't work.
From: Perrius Maximus (1984) on Thu Sep 27 14:41:03 2001
It isn't religion. It is a group of murderers, killing in the name of (cue Rage against the machine) God. Capitalism?!?!! nyuck nyuck nyuck!

The native americans, the blacks, the chinese, japanese, colombians, koreans, vietanese, irish-catholics, italains, mexicans, philippines, and our course women. God bless the U.S. and us too! These past days have seemed like a bad nightmare that we're soon going to wake from. Then you realize it's too true. I can't begin to fathom the terror in Manhattan, the pictures are just like a hollywood movie. It really can't be real that there are tons of twisted metal and concrete where two of the most regognized buildings in the world once stood. My husband is a New Yorker and most of his family still live on Long Island. I've been to the city many times and always marvel over the beautiful architecture of the buildings, both the old and the new. I pray that many more people are found in debris 'bubbles' alive. I pray that whoever masterminded this whole horrific episode is found. Initially I wanted this person dead too. BUT, that's what they want - to die for this cause is glory. I don't care how much it costs, lock them up in solitare and leave them to a slow lingering death without the glory they would feel by dying for their cause. Anyone who wold even think of doing this to thousands of innocent people is a coward - there's no glory in that. P.S. I guess I should have posted this on the Roundtable - my apologies...

Oh, say can you see, by the dawn's early light,
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming?
Whose broad stripes and bright stars, through the perilous fight,
O'er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming?
And the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.
O say, does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

God Bless the victims and their families, and survivors of September 11 2001
