Just a thought.... Isn't this an alumni site? Is there a site for current students? If not, someone might consider it. Most of the alumni either have teenagers of their own, HAD them, or WILL have them soon enough, and would LOVE to have a place where we can speak with people who have already "been there, done that, gotta-have-our-own-language" thing.
Val, I think the majoriety of people like the way you speak and look forward to your posts. Carol...Loosen up! VBA is funny and smart. Most of us here are adults and can "get" her sense of humor! PM keep it up! I (one of many, I'm sure) don't always agree with you, but enjoy your posts.

Carol, if "copious" is too big for you, you have my apologies. You just don't "get it", do you? It was tongue in cheek, and meant to be funny, but apparently you missed the joke. First you write that today's youth has a disregard for the English language, then you balk when PM and I use it! I'm not going to dummy down for those who didn't "try hard" in English class. Better they should get out a dictionary and learn something from what PM and I write. If that makes me "unreal" to you, or makes you believe I have a need to be "right" all the time, all I can say is "Oh Well!" To each his or her own. BTW: You're the first person here to ever complain about my verbosity.. so it must not be too daunting for most. Trying "ssssooooo hard"? I think not. Being literate comes easily to PM and I. I'm sorry if that isn't the case for everyone.
From:
Carol
(1978) on Sat Dec 8 23:48:13 2001
Hey! listen up. . .
first: I think that students today, West, South, North, or even in Montana have a total disregard for the english language. There are so many singers, actors, rappers, etc. that mock the "english" language that it is not 'cool' to speak english the way it is taught.
Second: VBA - I get the feeling from your "copious" posts that you are either
a) secure in your skin
b) or, have to tell everyone what they are doing wrong, so you are always right!
Didn't all of you act QUESTIONABLY when you were 15 - 16 -years old??? Didn't you have Spartan pride at every pep rally? Didn't you gawk over girls or blush over boys, and trip in the hallways when you saw "the object of your (weekly) desire"?
Bottom line: KIDS WILL BE KIDS and there was always a west-north-south-torrance rivalry, and will always be.
Third: VBA- PLEASE try to be a real person and not try ssssooooo hard to use BIG words and phrases, so poor us - common folk - can also understand and enjoy your copious wittisisms!
(Have you tried out for the Letterman cast?)
P.S. PM- you try too hard too!

Personally, after an evening at naja's, I prefer a taxicab to a spousal shuttle. Nice to see people enjoying the pleasures of the International Boardwalk, thank Allah for the open boarder agreement with the Seahawks. It's been some time, but let me see if I can remember my piersonal itinerary. Sunset-openers with friends and lovers at Najas, glass of ale. Dinner- fish at Quality Seafood (try and sneak into the Mexican restaurant with you fish if the Mariachi band is playing--don't get caught). To the bar at the top of Tony's Restaurant (easy to miss, but don't miss out on the classic fifties beach-front bikini bar decor, or on the fantastic 360 view)for a cocktail of your choice). Walk off your dinner and drinks by visiting the Great White Shark Exhibit (filled with all kinds of odd things), buy a captain's hat at the hat store, then go upstairs to enjoy a glass of wine at the Starboard Attitude (but only if there's a blues band playing--don't stay longer than one set, it gets stale fast). Back to najas to dance (space and air permitting), have a night cap, then go for a late-night (9:45) buying spree of toe-rings,tourist shirts, Africentric statuary, and local art at the local shops. Do not go back to Naja's! Walk the horshoe, watch people fish, and enjoy the romance and reassurance of the waves crashing on the piliings and rocks. Say goodnight to your friends, call for a cab, go home, make love, embrace for a good while, make each other laugh by modeling your new purchases, drink some water and take an aspirin. Sleep soundly.........Of course, there's a completely different itinerary, but it definitely ends with a great deal more water and aspirin. enjoy

I'm just letting you know of a great event that made its way into California this morning and will conclude in El Segundo around
2pm Sunday (11/11/01) Veterans' Day.
From the www.flagrun.org website:
"As a demonstration of American resolve and in support of the
victims' families, employees of American Airlines, United Airlines,
and Military Service Members, and Federal employees will carry a
United States flag across the country. This flag was flown over Iraq
in the cockpit of a U.S. F-16 in support of Operation Southern Watch
on October 2, 2001. Proceeds from this event will benefit selected
charities in support of the victims of the tragedy on September 11,
2001"
I'll be running with other volunteers on Sunday, starting approx
12:44pm near Culver City (Leg #63) then thru LAX and continuing on to
Dockweiller Beach in El Segundo where the flag will end its run
approx 2pm. The last mile, the flag will be carried by victims'
families, and people are encouraged to run that last mile with the
families. See http://www.flagrun.org/ca.html for details. Also, check
out the diaries and photos; very inspiring & heartwarming. If you
have specific questions re: the event itself, please contact the team
CA coordinators; I'm just one of the runners.

Megan... I totally understand your feelings about the bomb scares. IF it makes you feel any better, the threats have been going on for years. When I was at South (soooo long ago) there were a lot of threats then too. I imagine they haven't stopped. The school officials don't let the kids know much because they often freak out before they know the facts. I know a girl who made a threat because she was bored and wanted out of class. Thought there was no way she would get caught. WELL, they searched every locker until they found handwriting that matched the note, and SURPRISE, she WAS caught. They took it VERY seriously and she never returned to South. This was 30 years ago, and I imagine they have had a lot of experience since then. Its a drag, I know, but sometimes you have to trust the ones in charge. Remember....they are there too and they wouldn't be if they thought there was the slightest chance that it was a genuine threat. The world is pretty scary right now because of all of the uncertanty. I wish I had some more comforting words for you, but try to remember...Life is good and you are a lucky girl to be at South. Enjoy every day and treasure all the moments until (and after) you grow up and have to worry about your kids worrying about the state of the world.

Marc Longboy: That win was a very lucky win. You coaches had to go and cry to the CIF president saying that one of our guys wasn't allowed to play. If your school wouldn't have been such babies about football, THEN WE WOULD HAVE WON!!!!!!!!!! so don't even try to rub it in our face, cuz i'll rub it right back in urs.

Megan,
Your bomb scare was most likely someone's desperate attempt at getting attention. If your school emptied everytime there was a bomb threat, you would find you would have more bomb threats. Its not that your administrators didnt take the "threat" serious, they probably considered the source, checked it out and found the threat to be unwarranted. Again, the reaction these bozo's want is fear. If you show it, they will feed on it. If you dont show fear and things remain normal, its the best deterrant. Remember when your younger brother or sister used to pick on you in the car? What did your mother always tell you to do? Yell? Scream? No....Ignore them, and they will stop.

I am not a Sough High Alumni yet, but I have a question. We had a bomb threat today at school (Nov.1, 2001) and our new staff members thought that it wasn't nessacary to inform students or to move us all onto the bleachers in the football field. They said that we were not in danger of being harmed, yet there was a bomb on campus. Does that sound like a safe place to you, because it really made me and my friends mad. The whole reason that our campus is a closed campus is "for the saftey of our students" but it doesn't help keep us safe, we have had at least 1 bomb threat a year. Yet we are not informed! Thanks for listening!
