I am sure that no-one will be surprised at me having to put in my two cents. This isn't the first time that i've been accused of having a big mouth, or talking too much. I agree with the assesment that the board is working fine, James. The idea that one individual's posting is somehow more important than any other's borders on hypocrasy, and the idea that this site is not being used in the correct context is a nihilistic view. I dunno...perhaps i'm wrong. It wouldn't be the first time, but my take on this message board is that it is a place where former alumni of all ages can talk, share ideas, thoughts, and perhaps get to know (in a cyber sort of way) individuals that they never had the priveledge of knowing when they attended this great academic institution. Not one of my classmates makes an appearance out here, but perhaps that will change in time. Maybe it would be better if we all shut up and let the site go back to what it was before; the occasional and sporadic entry of "South SUX....North RULES!"

Both arguments about this site have valid points, I think. Some wish that the core group of posters (and you know who you are!) would just go somewhere else and leave this site for alumni wanting to drop in and leave brief notes for others. The core group is having way too much fun, meanwhile, to give it up, and besides, they think they've livened up what was once (let's face it) a pretty quiet site. What to do? If we try really hard not to let this argument slip into personal attacks, I'll bet we can figure out a reasonable answer. E-mailing each other doesn't work because part of the fun of this board is posting something into space and seeing what responses you get. You're always hoping to rile up some new visitor and suck them into a lively debate. On the other hand, the few people who leave one-line messages do get lost in all the stuff left by the core group. Those short messages quickly get shipped to the "older messages" page. How hard would it be, Byon, to add another message page to this site? It could be called, "The Debate Club" or something, and it would be for anyone who wanted to join in. Peacemaker, you've come up with the ideal suggestion.

Hey brother John, what do you think about all conversation? For me, I enjoy coming to this site. I look forward to seeing new names and I also like keeping up with the many opinions that are posted here. Trivia is alot of fun and breaks up the "heaviness" of some of the topics being discussed. And I'm pretty sure no one is trying to be "heavy" ;) The topic of website conversational content has touched the consciences of many-o-Spartan, as do politics, past careers, and child-rearing techniques. Everyone should stay and keep keeping in touch. THAT JUST COST EVERYONE TWO CENTS!! :) Dave

Richard.. Cammie who went to Walteria with us??? Ha Ha! And where the heck did all these people with problems regarding what is posted suddenly come from? Noone was chatting here AT ALL until these crazy discussions started.. so what's the problem? You want a message you wrote a month ao to still be sitting there viewable? Write it in your bio! What Byon said is this is a place for reading and writing to fellow alumnists. Kathy says: "a message board should be open to everyone to post messages not a continous dialog."
Where exactly did you get THAT idea? We ARE posting mesages and discussing many different topics! And I don't see any problems with anyone being unable to post, you certainly managed! Why on earth should WE email eachother, and not you and your friends? Because you don't want to read our posts? So don't read em, Kiddo! You said this site was working fine.. I have knews for you.. it still is! We are doing just what we're supposed to.. having a discussion with other alumnists from SHS..

Shirley, point taken. But if I may ask why is it so important for the few of you that have brought this to the table and seem to want the board the way they think it should be. To ask ten or twelve others who post here regularly to move somewhere else? I repeat this again, If Byon the great creator of this site intended it to be for all SHS alumni then why can't an addition, let me repeat that an addition be made to the site so that those who want to post one way can and the others that want a continual dialog with thier peers and freinds can post another way. I think you all have good points, but isn't this a place for people to reconnect, reflect, rebuild relationships, etc.? Peace, Love and a bowl of corn flakes.

In my opinion (what else did you expect) this board is working fine. Like it was said before this board is a living, breathing entity. Posts here can be answered by anyone visiting. Questions about looking for someone to rekindle an old friendship maybe someone here may have information that can help. As for e-mailing the discussions on the hot topics of the day it would lose their impact. The good thing about this board, as opposed to the one at classmates.com, is that is is on going and changing. The SHS site at classmates was a good place but it is nothing more than a place for the grads of the 60's to communicate. Dont't get me wrong I think it is good, but this site seems to like dialogue and opinions. That is all. James

Kathy, thank you for your response. Yes recently the board has seemed to take on a different life but I don't think it's incorrect. I ask you, when you post a message here what are you hoping for? Could it be that you would like a reply or would like to know something you were curious about or maybe just adding to a comment that someone else has posted? I think your wrong about Byon adding to this,I think most things of this nature are living not static. Some things need to change in order to accomidate all those who wish to use it. An addition to this site would benifit all parties. You seem to want it the way you think it should be and the others should go elsewhere. Aren't we all SHS alumni here and have the same right s as each other? Oh great and mighty Byon what is your take on this, what did you intend this site to be?

I'll ask you the same question, what do you think a message board should be? Your comment about important posts are getting lost, explain what youthink an important post is. I've looked back at this board and it seems to me that all these messages are important to the people that post them. Not everyone is going to agree about everything. It's a good lesson to learn at your age.

Peacemaker a message board should be open to everyone to post messages not a continous dialog. Zack hit it on the head they should email each other. Oh great and mighty Byon is there some sort of addition to this site that you can add so that we can please both groups of people. Say one place for people that want to have a continual dialog and one for those that only wish to post every now and then. Ok you guys give Bill a chance. This is what "our" schools are producing these days, so we have to coddle him, help him get a job (at mickey D's) at a wage so he can make a living and support a family,I think the DemLib's want (what?) 40-50k a year for a hamburger flipper? Then make sure he can waste all his income on buying toys, then we have to make sure that there is enough money in SS so he can eat dog meat in his older years. That is after he stops working and the age of (what will it be then?) 87.9 years. But if he dies before, the DemLib's will just keep him on the job to keep paying the SS & Medicare so they will give him a Government job til he reaches 87.9 years then he is allowed to die, with a Gov pension going to his cat. Then they will proclaim that we are not doing enough. (HA HA) I just had to say something. This was too easy to pass up. James

Oh, okay...i'll choke up with the answer. Some guys were wandering around in an old abandoned mine shaft (an extremely intelligent activity to engage in....not) and stumbled across an old pair of pants. They brought them out into the light (they obviously survived their little subterranean excursion...many abandoned mine shaft explorer's do not) and they decided that said pants were somewhat unusual, but in remarkably good condition. They then took them to a local dealer of antiquities, who promptly paid them 5000 dollars for them. A local auction house got wind of the pants and purchased them for 10,000 dollars. Levi Struass heard about them and bought them for 20,000 dollars, and placed them on display in their headquarters. I turns out they were original equipment Levi Struass Jeans circa 1880's

(Enough) we respect your right to post whatever it is you want on this site. We do not sit in judgment over you or anyone else here. Nevertheless, looking back this site was dogging before we started stimulating the conversation. It’s great sending messages back and forth with people I really never took the time to get to know. I wish I had taken the time back then, because these are great people and I think they have enriched my life since I started posting here. I have to say that I did get to know Kelly, she was the best. A good friend! She was one of the first people that I met at SHS. Anyway, back to the matter at hand, what’s wrong with talking about your kids, politics, history, who posed in Penthouse, college, etc? What’s wrong with asking others for their opinion? These are things that matter to us, that’s why we respond to them. If you want to post something do it, don’t use us as an excuse not to post, that’s a cop out. I’m sure what ever you post will be responded to with the utmost respect and by the person; you’re addressing it too. We may chime in with a comment every now and then. Remember this is a message board for all SHS alumni. As a matter of fact, we would love to hear from other alumni on any subject or even if it’s just to say hi! (Enough) you can liken this to reality TV; we come here because it’s real people saying real things in close to real time. Please, I encourage you not to leave but to post anything your heart desires. KELLY, don’t go!

You left out class of '84, guys. James...it will take more than a few demlib suggestions (or a leftist conspiracy) to silence my inordinately large and opinionated mouth. I have been watching this board for some time and I have noticed that it falls eerily silent in times that provocative or inflammatory subject matter is not posted. If the great and venerable Byon asked me to cease and desist I would have to consider it...but would probably deny him as well. I personally see nothing wrong with discussing such topics....provided that no one resorts to personal attack, or gets ugly about it. I think that we are a little more grown up than that, though. After all...one of the most useful things I learned in high School....was to speak my mind.

I think, Kell, that the only reason it's an 80-82 show is because of our recent and upcoming reunions. We are probably a little "hyper-interested" in being in touch. :) Prior to all this discussion there was little to nothing being said here at all... and the webmaster hasn't asked anyone to cease. I'm sorry if "Enough" isn't enjoying his or herself, but I can't see a reason for alumnist that want to talk to have to find another place to do so, and a chatroom isn't going to work because everyone is on at different times. Byon gave everyone the chance to post their email addresses, so you CAN contact your friends off site if you wish. While I respect "Enough"s views, I don't share them, and will continue to post messages with my fellow alumnists regardless of the topic, here, on the page Byon has provided for us to do just that, unless he decides he no longer wants us to do so. Kelly.. back to email for you and I, I guess, old buddy old pal!! :)

Val, your so open minded! Now back to my daughter, she is a great kid. Just has an attitude. She is known in her little group of degenerates (just kidding) as the goodie two shoes. She wants to save herself for marriage; she doesn’t drink, smoke or do drugs and has a good sense of morals. She was raised the right way. Unfortunately, we did the private Christian school thing to long and she was not able to really develop her social skills the way I would have liked. So now, she’s getting the real world all at one time and it’s hard for her to adjust. Nothing wrong with Christian schools if you go to the right one. We didn’t and have no one to blame but ourselves. We tried a different private school once and check this out. We actually had a teacher utterly terrify my daughter and them hit her in the chest twice. Oh yea, we reported it and the teacher admitted to it. Of course, she changed her mind when she found out she had to go to counseling. Her contract with that school was never renewed. Oh, and get this other parents not knowing what happened sent us anonymous letters saying all kinds of bad things about us and my daughter. Ignorant people. No idea how I got off on this tangent, sorry!

Davo, you said earlier that you you didn't know the difference between "Ms." and "Miss". "Ms." is a title used by women who do not wish to announce their marital status by way of their deisgnation. As "Dr." or "Mr." neither confirm nor deny marital status, women felt they needed an option other than "Mrs." or "Miss". I'm proud to be a "Mrs." myself, but can understand when the option could be a handy one. Lori

Hey Richard- I have a teenager, my son is 16. Does he have an attitude? Nope. Why? Because I wouldn't stand for it. He watches TV, (as much as he likes within reason) sets his own bedtime (always by 9:00) and gets himself up (at 5:30am no less) He's a B+ student, active in theater, vocal music, wrestling, soccer and tennis. He's very well liked by his friends, and THEY don't have attitudes either. Am I lucky? Nope. I'm blessed, to be ceratin, with a good boy by nature, but I'll give myself credit where it's due too. I was strict enough that he knew what was acceptable and what simply wasn't. Yeah, he pushes the envelope sometimes, he IS a kid afterall.. but he's always reasonable. My opinion is that you have to find the right mix of what you allow them to get away with so that they're content. If you lock up your liguor, kids will try to break in and drink it. If you let them taste your beer, the thrill is gone. I let my son smoke a cigar once. He wanted to try it, I said "go ahead!" The curiosity was satisfied, he thinks I'm a "cool" mom and that was the end of that. (And before I get any flack, I don't believe for one minute that it's unimportant if your kids like you or think you're "cool". It IS important that they feel like you can relate to who they are, or they won't talk to you when they need an ear) Anyway, enough soapboxing, but I had to get in on this one, I just hear SO much negativity about today's kids, and to me it's malarkey.. Todays kids are as good or better than we were! I just love them, they're eyes are open and so are their hearts and minds. I love their freshness and wonder.

Hey, do any of you have a teenager? Do they all have attitudes? I did when I was that age but I’m the parent now and by golly it’s different. I remember what I was like back then, bad Rich, bad Rich! I was a stinker. You think I’m going to subject my daughter to some like me back then, I don’t think so! No dating until she’s thirty I say, no actually we made a deal. She maintains a B plus average and she can date. I thought I had this one in the bag; this kid never had anything better than a C plus avg. The minute I made this deal she started getting good grades, three B’s & three A’s on her last report card. I can feel the gray hairs starting to grow already.

Kelly, You have hit it on the head with this subject matter. You are right when asking if advertisers think the public has a low I.Q. In fact they do. They also target the low I.Q. people who what something for nothing (sound like our LibDem's). What they are doing is what is allowed in our capitialistic society, profit making. The only way to combat these companies it is to educate our people. That would be hard considering that most probably do not know who the President is. Does anyone here remember the film from HS (history i think) where it was about an advertising firm selling a product, which happened to be cigerettes, It was done as a farce but at the end a Real Ad exec. came on and confessed that they can sell you anything. That day I learned not to be taken in by all those ads. That comment really enlightened me and I remember it to this day. Guess what they were right as seen by the modern day infomercials.

Kelly, I didn't take yours or anyone's comments here as "smart-alekcy" - I enjoy to hear people's opinions about history because you know what? That's what the history that we read in school and teach our kids today - it's the "opinion" of those who can argue their point better than the other who write the history. By the time I'd finished with my studies in History, I had to learn that sorry lesson. I did it so I can teach at a local community college and I really, really enjoy doing that as my "hobby", thats all. I don't know any more than any other person who is willing to read and study it. I think your comments are insightful and I thank you for the website, by the way, that I've checked out. I've bookmarked it and it will be a future reference for me when I teach Colonial American history next semester... Anyhow, I agree with your comment about veggies and being organic. P.S. Can I vent for a minute? Yesterday there was an infomercial on for a weight-loss shake that supposedly melts the fat away. The models for this stuff all looked like they go to the gym and lift weights two hours a day. Do advertisers think the public has a collective I.Q. of the current temperature? Have you ever noticed how much that stuff in the grocery store called "Fit" costs? It takes the wax and pesticide residue off your fruits and veggies. Wouldn't it be more reasonable to figure out a way to use fewer pesticides instead of just coming up with a high-priced product that capitalizes on the public's fear of carcinogens? Seems like buying organic produce would be money better spent. We now return you to your regularly scheduled topic.

Thanks, Kevin, for your long post on slavery. After posing my question on the slavery-sex-Bible thing, I read through the directory and saw that you have a Master's in history, so I knew you'd probably be the one to respond. It wasn't meant to be a smart-alecky question -- I've not read the Bible cover to cover, so I don't know what it says about slavery. As for reparations, I don't think that's the answer, either, for African-Americans. I agree with Bill that if anybody should get reparations (and they'd have to be so major I couldn't even begin to figure out where to start) it's the Native Americans.
From:

Kevin's right. Reparations now would be a major smack in the face for those who made the maximum sacrifice to free the slaives. They paid with their lives !!! Their precious lives " Bought " that freedom and with so many who died , perhaps they overpaid. But it is done, so those who suggest reparations for those who were given " free lives" ought to " get a life " . If any one deserves reparations it is the people of a culture that was here in the US for 10,000 years and ended up experiencing genicide , reservations, and poverty even to this day. and in the aftermath of being freed there were black cavelry that assisted in the genicide. Rightousness and Reparations are both words that begin with " R " , perhaps those looking for the reparations could take the time to ponder the concept of if anyone should get any reparations hhhhhhhmmmmmm who do ya think the recipiants should be ?? Think of the concept.

Thank You Kevin. This is one area that my children and I have studied for quite a while and I really tried to give them as full a picture as possible. Taking out our personal feelings and experiences and learning about the Southern Culture vs. Northern Culture. In that context, for us it was easier to see how slavery thrived for a time. We are into the Reconstruction period and its difficult, very difficult to read of the things that came out of Reconstruction.

The issue of slavery in our country is quite difficult to understand today. It's been over 135 years since the last slave was born in this country. When the country was founded, that slavery was allowed was due to compromise. Several times during the convention in 1787, Southern delegates and Northern delegates clashed over that issue. It was allowed, though the importation of slave officially stopped after 1808. The Northwest Ordinances of 1785 and 1787 expressly prohibited slavery - that was Thomas Jefferson - the one, Kelly, who owned slaves and had sex/relationship with Sally Jennings. Most people in this county don't understand that the South, on the eve of the Civil War, over 76% of the White population owned no slaves and that less than one tenth of one percent owned more than 300 slaves - Slavery is not understood historically in it's total context. People are quick to judge whites who bought them, but quickly forget that over 90% of slaves were captured by their fellow countryman and many forcibly marched across West Africa to be traded with Europeans for Gold, Rum and other goods coveted in Africa. And one thousand years before the first Europeans arrived, Islamic forces had introduced the slave trade to Africa. Africa is a very diverse Continent with a rich history of it's own - filled with clashing cultures and foreign influences - some hailed and others cursed. But to answer your question, Kelly, about how could a founding father justify owning slaves and call himself a Christian, one only has to look in the Bible - there are several references, Old Testament and New Testament, mentioning slavery. I personally don't and never will agree with that vile institution - that a man feels he can own another like property. Any debt owed to slaves was paid with blood during the Civil War - when men gave their lives - men who never owned slaves nor understood why other did, but fought to free them and keep this nation together. After the Civil War, the Reconstruction period was supposed to right the wrongs done to blacks, but didn't erase in 12 years what had transpired for the previous 200 years. I personally am against reparations - for several reasons, but mainly because it's been 135 years since the last slave was born in this country. As I've stated before, though imperfect, this nation has done more than any other nation to right the injustices done to others. This government should apologize, officially, but reparations to the living today is a smack in the face of dead Union Soldiers who gave everything they could so that the nation would endure.

Kelly, I am not condoning what they did. I was just saying that having slaves was the norm for the world at that time, and their behavior is between them and their God. Do not judge, least ye be judged. Also that we should not "Pay" for our past mistakes. We have done so much, albeit badly, for the blacks of this country. Correcting for past mistakes should not be hand outs. Look at LBJ's War on Poverty! We have spent (what 2-4 Trillion) on this "War" and blacks are worse off then they were in the fifties. I believe our resident historian Kevin Smith can back this up. What about "Give a man a fish and feed him for a day or teach him how to fish and feed him for a lifetime". I am for helping people but I am not for giving people a handout. James

The fact that out Founding Fathers were Slave owners (in my opinion), does not matter as slave ownership was practiced by most countries of the time. Why do we have to pay for our country's past today. I know this is just one issue but it is being brought up today by some blacks who what money from the Government due to our past slave ownership. We cannot change our history but the best we can do is learn from it or we are doomed to repeat it. I think Kevin is right that we got most of our ideas from the European form of rule.

I actually asked Ms Stewart about it once. She said that it started way back when, maybe the early '70's, when a boy at South saw a centerfold that looked a lot like her (Miss McVeigh was her name at the time). Rumors started that it was her, but she said Mr. Rotcher wouldn't have hired her if it had been her. And then she said (and this is a direct quote!) "Look at me, I have no tits and a fat ass -- do you think I would pose naked???" So, I'm sure it was all a wicked rumor, started by a bunch of hormone-charged teenage boys, sneaking a peak at their dads' Playboys…

I always thought their primary influence was from British Common Law and the Enlightenment ideas of democracy that sprang up in Europe. John Locke, for example, was one such person they borrowed from. Can you give a couple examples of the ideas they borrowed from Native Americans? It sounds really interesting and I'd like to pursue the research. PM - I do agree that the United States, in my opinion, is and remains the greatest nation on earth. Hey, Richard Weeks, 15 years ago I couldn't have told you exactly where Iowa was -- somewhere in the middle, somewhere near the top. Now I know it intimately enough to have no shame at all about living here. (Now if you want to talk about DREAD... Just kidding, sort of.) It's good to live in a small Midwestern town, at least for a while. If only there were mountains, better weather, fewer large-scale hog lots. But isn't diversity part of what makes this country great? I can't agree with you, Perrius, that it's the greatest in the world, much less the greatest ever. I don't know any other country the way I know and love this one, and it seems awfully arrogant to keep saying, "We're Number One!" all the time. Most countries with stable governments are probably populated with citizens who feel exactly the same way. Our founding fathers were astonishingly wise, and had profound political vision. They were Christians. Many of them were also slave owners. They borrowed some of their Constitutional ideas from Native Americans. I'd much rather see them for who they really were than glorify them. And I'd like my kid to know all the facts about her country's history, not gloss over the more painful ones because they paint a less than complimentary picture of the white men who tended to run it.

Okay...here we go. I have not read this book, admittedly, but I have read excerpts from it and have heard numerous quotes from it. One need not engross themselves in a work such as this to see it for what it is; historical revision. Are there some facts included in this work...sure, there are some. The fact is, we all know about the injustices done in this country. We know about how Africans were captured and enslaved, emancipated and then discriminated against for centuries. We know that the Plains Indians were swept onto reservations, and in certain times and places, people were persecuted for their beliefs. We know about Sen. Joe McCarthy and his witch hunt for "communists". You can read about these events everywhere. Can you give me a valid reason for focusing only on subject matter such as this in our children's educational institutions? Shall we have all of our children grow up to view this country in the same manner as that of Louis Farrakhan and his twisted entourage? Does the fact that these events occured impugn our past to the point that this nation of ours is not the greatest in the world, and perhaps even in history, despite the fact that we are flawed the same as anyone else? Perhaps Mr. Loewen would be happy if all we taught our children in school is how the human race is nothing but a congregation of soul-less wretches deserving of our own impending annihilation. The fact that the founding fathers of this country were very very wrong at times does not make the contributions they made any less great. These people were all part of the evolution of the human species. I am open minded, Kelly... very much so. I just happen to be a free thinker as well. I don't let people like Mr. Loewen do it for me. Richard..that be me. Dave, I was in Van Nuys recently and happened to catch the CAF in a meet there. There is nothing like seeing those old birds take to the air.
