Well, Zack, I'm truly glad that Al Osburg left behind SOMETHING that at least one person is happy with. Believe me, you ARE in the minority. I have spoken with administrators that would not allow their children to be placed in his classes because they considered him mentally unstable. There is a difference between infamous and famous, and Al belongs in the first catagory. You truly are the very first person I've ever EVER heard say anything good about the man. Why am I not surprised that's your take on things? :) I dunno...
From: Zack (2000) on Sun May 27 11:41:38 2001
I learned the most important thing.... how to laugh at myself. How to deal with assholes. How to make even the most cynical people crack a smile. How far is too far. I have lots of Osburg stories to tell. I miss him. He's a legend because he left a legacy behind him. When he was mean to people, like me, he was usually trying to get something accomplished.... there are much meaner teachers that teach at South now and in the near past. Zack

Just have to respond to a couple of things I've just read on here.........."Scotty" is alive and well, working as campus security at Torrance High (today!)And the nickname for Mr. Mitchell was "Applehead". He died about 1976/7? It sure is fun to come here and "reminise". Thanks

Kelly- The reason there was a need for a solution was because Zack pointed out a problem. Where did Richard suggest a second board before Zack's "I believe this site has lost it's original meaning" post? I'm pretty sure he didn't. Chonk

Gee...lemme guess?! :)
From: Kelly Scott (1980) on Sun May 27 05:55:34 2001
Chonk -- actually I think the second board WAS Richard's idea. If you go back through the old messages you can read how this subject came up well before you and Zack got into the discussion. And Zack, no, I'm not a better driver because of Al Osburg. He stands out in my memory because he was one of the few SHS teachers who were deliberately mean and generally obnoxious. He had no effect whatever on my steering technique, although, to be fair, every student with every teacher had to learn that hand-over-hand turn; it wasn't like it was exclusively an Osburg thing. So tell me, what did you learn from Osburg that was more important than anything else you learned in high school, and why do you say he's a legend?
From: Anne Proudfoot (1980) on Sun May 27 01:17:47 2001
I also had Mr. Osburg for drivers' training. This was in summer school so we had about a 2 hour period to drive around. We'd get a lemonade and cruise PV. There was Mr. Osburg and 3 students; me, Dave Thayer and a guy named Stosh (his last name omitted to protect the innocent…). Dave and I have had a few good laughs over the years remembering that class. I remember Stosh hitting the brakes, and when Osburg asked him why he said 'Because of that dog….'. There was no dog in the road! And Dave remembers having to drive to Stosh's house for him to get shoes since Osburg wouldn't let him drive barefoot. It's amazing to think we have survived this long….
From: Zack (2000) on Sun May 27 00:35:27 2001
Osburg is a legend. I learned more from him then I did from my entire 4 year experience at South. As for Kelly, you're probab;y a better driver because of it.... I mean you obviously remember, and have probably altered your steering wheell and will technique.

Valerie wrote: "Thank you, Kelly and Richard, for making this second new board a reality. Without you, this would not have happened, and credit should be given when it's due." Obviously, Zack had nothing to do with it. ha ha. You's funny Valerie. Chonk

Val -- yep, sounds like the same guy I remember. Speaking of which, is anybody doing anything special for Memorial Day? I don't mean picnics and BBQs, either. Anything in remembrance?
From: VBA (81) on Sat May 26 07:21:42 2001
Or in your desire to spark a debate...! I had one of the Gym teachers for drivers ed, and due to that persons absence, Osburg for the final. I should tell you that I had a 100 in the class both behind the wheel and on paper. Al (he'd been in big trouble before because I wouldn't put up with his mouth) decided to fail me in my test. Fail me? Please! So I told Ms Strong and we made a deal: She'd call another gym teacher immediately, and I'd retake the test, but nothing would be said to Osburg unless I did well. She did this immediately, and you guessed it, I got 100 (again) and his butt was in a sling (again). I could not stand his petty grudgematches! (And, for the record, I got 100% at the DMV too, so it wasn't a fluke!) That man was THE most childish obnoxious ass. You're the only person I've ever heard say they actually heard someone LIKED the man, but I suppose it's possible, as he had his pets, and SOMEONE had to fill those shoes! :)
From: Kelly Scott (1980) on Sat May 26 06:58:50 2001
Thanks, Valerie. It was Zack who said that "Al Osburg could have taught for 40 more years . . . so much spunk." Personally, I didn't see spunk so much as utter obnoxiousness. I had Osburg for one drama class and as my driver's education instructor. Yeah, I got to sit in a car with him while he berated my hand-over-hand wheel turning skills. Yet I've heard from a couple of other people that Osburg was one of their favorites. It's all in your perspective, I guess.
From: VBA (81) on Sat May 26 06:40:43 2001
We were both wrong, Monica, actually, Cruh's photo is in the first 3 yearbooks, so he must have killed himself during our Junior year. And it was me, Kell, that said Osburg retired, I was actually talking to a couple of different staff memeber at SHS who were just thrilled. Apparently, he'd become even more erratic and unreasonable the longer he taught, and as you know, he was pretty bad in the 1970s! :) I guess by the end he was grading even his regular subjects based on who he liked, instead of just drama! Scary.. of course this is all heresay, but I'm inclined to believe it as he was always half baked anyway! :)

Oops. Make that Furjanick. And what's up with the main grassy area around the flagpole? There's a picture of it on the first page of the SHS web site that just looks like sidewalks going through a giant sandlot. Is there no grass there anymore? I live 1,500 miles away, or I'd go look.
From: Kelly Carll Scott (1980) on Sat May 26 06:08:54 2001
Has anyone else visited the SHS web site? There's a link to it at the bottom of the home page here. Go to the staff section and you might be surprised to see how many of our old teachers are still at South. I was glad to see that the wonderful Mrs. Furjanek is still teaching English. It must be a little out of date, though, because it still lists Al Osburg as teaching. Didn't Zack say he retired?

Mr. Carr took us on a field trip to the Hyperion Sewage Treatment Plant in El Segundo. Guys walking around with paddles, stirring vats of..sewage. Eww. Who else went? Kerry Rider was a friend of mine at the time, and I managed to convince Carr that Kerry had a burning desire to learn about the art of sewage treatment.. so even though she wasn't in the class, he wrote her a pass for the day and she went along. Of course, about half way through, we snuck off. Who else was in the 5th period class? Jenny Card, Jenny Brewer, Derrick Sapien... As for Cruh Parker, he committed suicide the summer between our sophomore and junior year. Shot himself, as I recall. Seemed like a nice kid, but he was ridiculed a lot because he was so tiny.. the guys picked on him. In the 80's, he shot himself.. today, things might have been different, eh? Rich: Look on pages 240-241 of the junior yearbook for photos of Kimmy and Cruh.

Rich- Kim Gentry died from cancer our senior year(1980). She was able to come back to school for awhile and had to wear a wig because she lost all her hair after the chemotherapy. Not sure about Cruh Parker.

Mrs Benfur - the chills are coming back. She actually reached inside my mouth and pulled gum out once - can you imagine a teacher doing that today. She subbed at Seaside and when I started going to CM, I thought I was done with her - NOT. Oh, the horror. She was like the boogey man to the kids - the stuff legends are made of. We're still taking about her 25-30 years later - how scary. KDC

Ok Val, I will do my best to provide you with a short but concise answer on Terri Lynn Hollis. Back in the day of the dinosaurs, wait let me speed this up for you. Back in the 70’s there was this school called Hillside elementary. Hillside was a great school full of fun loving kids without a care I the world, or biggest worry was what we were going to do after school. There wasn’t really anything bad on the news at the time, you could go any where and not worry about it. You could leave your house unlocked. You get the picture. We lived in what we thought was a safe time and place. Wrong, realty check! Terri Lynn Hollis became the biggest news item for a while, she was abducted and was missing for quite some time. If I recall correctly her body was found off a rock jetty in Oxnard. Very very sad thing, I don’t recall if they caught anyone our not. This really affected many people at the time and I imagine it still does. We (Torrance) planted a tree in her honor at the School had a little ceremony and everything, but that didn’t help ease the memory of that tragic event. Clove cigarettes yuk, I never did like them. Helen Who?

James: I went to Calle Mayor and clearly remember Mrs. Benfir. She was not a well liked sub! I remember someone putting glitter in her hair without her knowing. Didn't she love to strengthen those lungs o' hers by yelling.

Oh Helen! Could you be speaking of Mr. Carr?! Ha! Yes I was in that class and I think I sat by you, Teri Bailey, Gretchen and Ed Williams. He used to "GO OFF" and many of us would be in many different altered states. Man, those were some good times. Poor guy. You are good, girl!

PM, Where did you live on Sharynne Lane? I was near the Ball Park. We Raised some serious h**l in that neighborhood in my days. One thing in my / our favor was we did these things stone cold sober I do not know if this was good or bad but we escaped without a record. Just a note if my daughter did anything like this I will chew her a new ...... we know what. If My DAD was alive during this period I would not be here to talk about this. HAHA

Mr. Carr?
From: Helen (81) on Fri May 25 10:22:40 2001
I remember 5th period Oceanography, our junior year. The teacher's name escapes me, but he used to rant about his beer bread recipe and how much he loved beer bread. 5th period followed lunch and most of us loved to party. I sat with Nanette Taylor. Gretchen Struble was there, Michelle Scott, Curtis Insley, Karen Lloyd, Pam (were you in that class?). Anyway, one fine day, the teacher asked a question and no one was paying any attention. So he starts screaming about sniffing glue and the sorry state of youth today. He really let loose. Someone in back started laughing and soon the whole class was falling off their chairs. I heard that was his last year teaching.

Kelly...as far as cigarettes go, clove are by far worse for you than any other out there...even the (hack) filterless tobacco variety. I smoked them for a while as well, until learned more about them. James, I lived on Sharynne Lane for about a year and a half. I'm surprised that we never met. I too had many a freshman and sophmore shenanigans in the Willow Tree. We used to go into the elevators and pull the emergency stop buttons (with the doors open) and then run, leaving the alarm bell going. One time a maintenance guy finally saw us. He got so mad that his face turned red, and he chased us all the way off the property, over the fence and into the SHS fields. he never did catch us though.

O.k... let me get this straight. Kristie Ross died of a drug overdose in 1981? Oh dear. I am very very sorry to hear this as she was a good friend in my sophomore and junior years. Helen, if you have anything on this, articles, photos, etc, can you contact me offsite, we need to talk. Does this mean that all these years I've thought Kristi Nair (82) was dead and she's probably fine? Oh my. Who was Terry Lynn Hollis? I couldn't find her in a yearbook... And yes, Kell, I smoked them too. Kids still do.. they always reminded me of thse crafts we made in girlscouts or whatever.. they always involved cloves...

Ok here is an almost busted story. We, my older brother (Frank) and some of us Sharynne Lane people, went to the Willow Tree apartments to...."explore" and while doing this exploring (we were racing shopping baskets up and down the hallways) their rent a cops chased us and caught one of us, and he did spill the beans on us. Hey he was caught and scared, but his parents came and got him but we never heard one thing about it. His Dad must have been hard on him. We have done many things in the Seaside area where we should have gone to jail or at least scared by the Police. I guess we were lucky. Where are all the people who grew up in the Seaside area?

Pam, You know I have been teetering on that name all night long. I looked through the annual’s and found her in all but or senior annual. I do not want to give out any incorrect info but if I recall correctly, Christie Ross is the one I am talking about. I agree Val, she was a terrific person. I didn’t really know her that well but I thought she was cool and from what I can remember she was well liked. Christie, if I am wrong (SORRY). Cavin did take her to Sadie Hawkins; I was looking at the picture last night. Hey, wasn’t Cavin in a Go Go’s video? I’m so bummed, I tried to get Deb in trouble last night (brother, Sister thing) for drinking the Tequila Sunrises and getting busted and found out my mom already knew. Matter of fact, my mom told me that the day of Deb’s graduation my mom got my sister and a couple of her friends a few Tequila Sunrises and they all drank them before the big event, mom included. The shame! I’ll be scared for life now. Deb, you were right, I was wrong! Mom said we did take additional swimming lessons there. Hey Val, I don't remember. What did happen to Cruh Parker & Kim Gentry? I so them in the annual in the in memory of section but I don't remember what happened.

Did anyone else smoke clove cigarettes in high school? I had a serious clove jones back then, entirely the fault of my West High boyfriend. What were those little ciggies called? Balkan Sobranies or something like that. No, the red pack had a really cute name. Clove cigarettes probably release some chemical into your system that sits quietly for 25 years and then gives you several forms of cancer simultaneously. But, gee, they sure did smell and taste good! Kind of like smoking an Easter ham.

Hiya, Pam! :) Cav took Kristi Ross to one of the dances, and she was a punker. We were friends, and *somewhere* I have one of the pictures.. I think it was a Sadie Hawkins dance.. but I digress..anyway..I heard that Kristi Nair (who was a year behind us) died.. I did not hear that Kristi Ross did.. maybe I missed the news. That would be bad, I really liked Kristi. I remember though when she tried to use Nair to "do" her eyebrows and it ate them all off...oh dear! :) I hope she's still crazy and funny somewhere..

REUNION STORY: My 20 yr. reunion was in 1997. I had been e-mailing back n forth with an old friend before hand who was also helping out finding alumni. Well she had told me that this guy that I had a total crush on in school had passed away a few years back. Usually at the reunions they have a memorial table set up with pictures of passed away alumni. His picture was there on the table. I found out later that they had to remove his picture because someone saw it there and said that he had talked to the guy the night before! Guess someone had added him to the deceased list without checking it out throughly. The guy wasnt at the reunion but attended the picnic the next day. He sure looked good for a dead guy!!

Chrissy Nair I believe was a year younger than me. She had an older sister I believe a year older than me. Chrissy and I were friends until one night at a football game after the 2 of us taking a diet pill and drinking a coke (it used to get you wired) she got sick and her big sister got totally pissed and blamed it all on me. Hey I didnt force her to take it! Her sister forbid her to hang out with me. I did hear later about a suicide or something but I dont know the details.

Okay, how about those parties on Friday night at "Rat" beach? We'd stop by Ralph's Market on way and pick up wooden crates for bonfire - before police would get there, fire department would usually come down first and put out fire with sand...after a couple weeks, police would begin to run us off - never got "caught" but had a few close calls...all in good fun...

Lets hear about your best getting busted stories! Mine is when some friends of mine (Kathy, Carrie and Karen, I wont mention last names hehe) and I were on a kick of drinking Tequilla Sunrises. Well I was broke and couldnt pitch in on the liquor so I didnt drink (that ONE time) and was the one driving that night anyway so that was ok. Well we went to the school behind South high to drink. I remember us sitting on a picnic table and I heard something and looked over to the corner of a building and saw some long object sticking out. Well it ended up being a billy club attached to a cop. Yup we were busted. They came over and took the booze from the girls, lectured us and threatened to call our parents. I pleaded with them that I was not drinking and was the driver for the night. They let us go with a warning, I guess they figured how scared we were was lesson enough. Anyone remembr the Torrance cop who patrolled the school and was at all the footbal games? Hertica was his name. I got to know him well, HAHAHA no I was busted that much but we used to chat with him all the time.

Her name was Laura, she was a good person I used to live by her and we were friends. Hummmmm so sad. Val my pal. (Heheheheh it rhymed) you member the girl that killed herself (I think) she was into new wave and wore strange clothes. Once she wore, a belt wrapped all around her body kinda a punk rocker. I will look in my annual and see if I can find her name. Oh my cigarettes in high school you people should be ashamed of your self’s. I would never smoke. Ya right!

One of Mrs. Mitchells daughters was my softball coach. I played Bobby Sox with the Ruch's and remember being kind of close to their mom because she has the same birthday as I do. I think their mom coached for a while too. I remember the candy store you mentioned but dont remember if that was the name or not. I remember the bunny! I remember the school but not the name. I got to go there and be a teachers aide when I was taking a child development class. Bro remember taking swim lessons at that pool? Girls, when I was at South and it was baking day in home ec the football team would be outside the door waiting for handouts! Was it that way for you too? Deb, I remember Newberry's very clearly, and that cute little cafe. I actually found a lunch counter like that at a Woolworths in NY a few years ago. I thought they were all gone. As far as the lunches go, we used to always get our cigarettes from the gas station on Hawthorn and Newton on the way to school.. and whatever lunch money we had left would usually get spent on a chocolate shake and fries. On days we didn't need cigarettes, we ate better! Narcs: Scotty (short grey hair, female, from Scotland) Mrs. Mitchell (overweight older lady) then there was Ben, the cute blond and Rick, the dark haired one who got jumped and beat up in the Victoria's Station parking lot for his efforts at keeping SHS kids in line! :( I don't know who the bald guy was though.. Home ec teachers:Mrs. Keegan, Mrs. Meusing and Mrs. Sand... something... Sandberg? I dunno. Remember the bunny standing in front of..oh shoot...was it Nancy's Candies? On Hawthrone, right in Walteria. And what was the name of the place where everyone went swimming.. it was a school of some sort or something, across from the candy shop..
From: Pam (81) on Thu May 24 11:25:52 2001
Deb, yes the Bird Farm was there next to the Begonia Farm. I cannot believe that was replaced by MORE homes! And don'f forget "Kiddie Land" that was right next door to A&W and Walteria Park. I think "Kiddie Land" was torn down to make way for McDonalds. And yes Bottle Caps did rock!

Jeez, I feel like I'm on SHS Jeopardy and I finally know the answer! Papa Garo's had the Surf Burger. The Reactors played a reunion concert in El Retiro park on July 4th, I think the year was 1989.

I was talking with my brother this morning and we were reminising some. What was the name of the little market or liquor store that was over by Walteria school? I remember walking over there after school all the time. hehe Bottle caps rocked! We talked about the Newberrys in Rolling Hills Plaza and the little cafe it had inside. Someone mentioned Sambos earlier. My friends and I always went there. We often would "kidnapp" each other late at night on our birthdays and go there and kick back drinking coffee. My first job was at McDonalds there on PCH by the park. Wasnt there some sort of bird farm there at Anza and PCH at one time? Anyone remember the murders at the old Rolling Hills theater? OK I have a question; what was everyones favorite lunch at South? For me it was the spaghetti. That was before I found out it wasnt cool to eat in the cafeteria. Then it was getting a burger at the outside food place. I was a bad girl and was part of the "back 40". Remember us? The behind the library smokers??? I have quit the nasty habit but I remember sneaking back there to lite one up. Oh Oh... What was the name of the narc?? Most of you might not have known them. I think the young ones were gone by the 80'. There was a cute blonde one who all the girls liked, a dark headed one and for a while there was an older bald guy who I think had a heart attack or something but he was really mean. One time 2 of my friends and I were late for class. As we got to the classroom one of us handed someone something (I cant remember what it was) and he came and took us to the Principal because he thought we were passing drugs. We had to empty our purses out and my friend Pam Winslow had a four leaf clover in a little box that her boyfriend had given her. the dud thought it was pot. The principal even laughed at him. She apologized for him wasting our time and she gave us passes back to class. What was the names of the home ec teachers?

Richard that was Nino's Pizza, and at the time of my graduation, it was still like a buck for a big slice of pizza and a coke. The placed was PACKED every day with SHS students. I spent most of my summer days down at El Porto. The surf was always better there. The break on the beaches in Torrance and Redondo always sucked (except when there was a swell and breakwater started pumping). Anyone remember that big swell in 83', and the time that those kids got slammed off the top of the Redondo Breakwater by 16 to 20 foot surf? I saw it happen. I cut class that day because I heard there were huge peeling lefts out there.

PAM: I think I have a lead on Cavin, but I have no clue aboiut the others, although it's possible the planning company might have found them. (we'll know in 7 weeks, eh?) TONY: Bruce and Brian went to SHS class of 1981. Small world.. DEB: if it closed before 1977, that's why I don't remember. Until I went to SHS I spent my time in the Walteria area. Anyone else live there?
From: Deb (1977) on Thu May 24 09:32:04 2001
Kelly... Was it Frosty's???? (glad you knew where I was talking about) I don't think the burger place was there much after 1977. They also served ice cream cones, I remember getting the chocolate dipped ones. Those who dont know what the heck we are talking about; It was right there by the far end of the school parking lot where that shopping center started. Now that I think of it. I think it did close before I graduated.

He’s going to play in the sand for a month at the National Training Center up by Barstow. Bill take my e-mail address with you so we can get together when you get a free moment. Tony, the Windjammer used to be a place for those of us who were far from 21 to hang out after the beach, order a soda and fries, and plug your coins into the jukebox at each and every table. I'll raise that glass of rootbeer and say cheers to the memories...thanks Karen (Angers) Hulstyn! And what about the swim school that was on Avenue I just about where Casa Pulido now resides? Was that called "Miss. Beth's"?
From: Pam (Lawson) Horton (1981) on Thu May 24 08:52:41 2001
Richard, Mi Casita!!! What a fun place that used to be. The days of the Jades and the Reactors! Would it be too much to ask for the bands to regroup and play at our reunion in July? Dream on! Hey, does anyone remember Rolphie who made the "beach burger" on Catalina up from Burnout? What was the name of that place? Brings back so many memories...where are you, Lisa and Sue Rucks? Mike Murphy, Cav, Mike Dunn, Lynne Stevenson, the list is endless. James, as for Woody's...now that is a memory. We were youngin's then. Elementary school and what a fun place that was with the wood shavings on the ground and peanuts. I am told that there is still one in existance on Sepulveda on your way to LAX. Hi Kelly Carll. Do you remember the days of hanging out with all the kids...Suzanne, yourself, me, Cari, Chris and Casi Andrews and all the Campbell's? XO to all my friends.

It was Market Basket. I thought the place across the Pup-N-Taco was a Chinese Place. I remember the Shell Station and that Dave Dalton worked there. What was the name of the supposed gay bar in Redondo Beach on PCH? Remenber the Alpha-Beta on PCH when heading to the beach? And you cannot forget 31 flavors on the way home from the beach on those hot summer days.
From: Tony Carstens (1962) on Thu May 24 08:44:24 2001
Debra and Richard: So you must have lived two houses down from us on Delos Dr. We lived there from 1955 (when my folks bought that house new for $12,500) until they divorced in 1962. There were five of us Carstens' kids, and I'm sure the neighborhood was glad when we moved out. Anyway, it sounds as if you (or at least your folks) lived there roughly for some of the same years we did. For anyone else, on to some other nostalgia: I got my first job as a dishwasher at the Parasol when they first opened. My next job was at the old Windjammer Restaurant (on Avenue I, I think) down by the beach. That used to be a late nite recuperating place for kids to get straightened out before going home after a hard night of partying. That place probably predates a lot of you. The old A&W near Walteria Park used to be a Friday night cruise joint for all the kids to show off their cars, etc. And lastly, probably no one remembers the old miniature golf course that used to be on PCH (fairly close to SHS). I think the Quo Vadis apartment buildings now stand there. Val: you asked me several days ago if Bruce or Brian were relatives of mine. Not that I know of. And there aren't a lot of people running around with my last name either, so who knows. Later. Tony

Sav-On and Ralphs were on the Anza side of SHS, with the donut joint and Sambos. On the other side, with PupNTaco, wasn't it Market Basket? I remember Latitude 20.. the name anyway.. and what was that Italian Place that was sp popular? Why am I thinking it was something brothers..? And the French place, I remember, but not the name! Ok, what were the names of the two dace places on Crenshaw close to PCH. I think one of them is now called Mi Casitas. Zack, Chonk. Sorry if you felt like I was accusing you. You two should know better by the posts I have written. If I am going to out right accuse someone, I will do it. In any case, guys relax, no one is out to attack or accuse you of anything. What is done is done and what has been said has been said. We have a solution and when it arrives will all be the better for it. We are moving on! Hey big sister, Melissa cannot date until she is thirty-five or I am ready for her to date. PS. Matt asked her out on Friday and she was supper happy. Naturally, I put the kibosh on it. Matt’s not on the approved list. OK, right across the street from Pup & Taco was a gas station and a small shopping center. What was the name of the French restaurant that was in there? Oh and Jason if your peeking in on this you can’t answer cause I know you know. Deb, what burger shack are you talking about? Be more specific on where it was.

I think the name of that marked was Boys Market? Seems to ring more familiar than Market Basket, though I remember both. Anyone remember Latitude 20? Wasn't that a bar/dance joint on PCH near Anza? Anyone ever "get in" there while still in HS?

Hooray for James!! Methinks thous hast hit the nail upon the head! Of course, I suppose then folks will say "well, we want to talk *too*, but we did want a place to ask questions!!" Maybe what we need is not another conversation board but what the BBS Communites used to call a "wall" where simple one liners (Like "Who won Prom Court?") Could be posted and simply one line answers left by someone else. Now, Gals, I an stuck on the burger joint in question.. in fact, I've no idea what Burger Joint you're talking about!! Help! Supply data! All I can remember is the donut place over by Sambo's on one side and the PupNTaco up on Call Mayor and PCH on the other! I am clueless about the burger joint in question. And Chonk/Brian, because Richard said he thought he knew who did it did not implicate you, in fact what matters is that he did NOT accuse based on supposition, right? So chill and grin, Kiddo. Everyone is trying to play nice til we part ways (Well, Zack is still calling people "fools", but we'll ignore that)

PM, Rich, Thanks for asking where I have been. I know you all missed me and my razor wit. hahaha. The truth is that I have been working like a dog trying to finish up some projects. Being a contractor means you have to do what it takes to finish it. Anyone what a house built? On to the latest in the news: Have heard about our "beloved" Uncle Jesse Jackson being in Torrance on wednesday to complain about some ads from Toyota, He was planning a boycott if their were not removed. As usual he was acussing them of being racists. Now Toyota has apoligized and guess who's business will get money to shut him up? His new illegimate daughter might even get a car dealership out of this if he follows his past. I am back. As for the second board I am all for it and it should be for those who want to find out about the prom king, recent football scores etc. As was stated before Byon called this an Alumni board if you can't figure it out look it up. I make this prediction: Those who want a second board will get it then come back to this board because it is fun and zippy. James

Hi Deb -- the name of that burger joint is driving me nuts. I don't think it was Foster's, but then I don't know if I'd remember the name if I heard it. You are talking about the place right next to the SHS parking lot, right? It was run by a really nice old couple, as I recall. Everyone knew them by their first name. They were incredibly popular with students. Shoot. Now I'll be thinking about it all day.

Helo everyone! Thanks to my little brother for turning on to this message board. Way cool! I just read back on some of the posts. I have been online for many years and its been my experience that on every message board at some point in time someone is going to impersonate someone, someone is going to posy under a bogus name and most likely it will be putting someone down. Usually if you ignore the jerks and don't respond to their post, they go away. Richard my brother dear. My adorable neice is at an awkward age. She is totally boy crazy. You can try to keep her from dating and/or having a boyfriend period. It isnt going to happen. No matter what she will have one before you are ready for her to. Unless you go to school with her every day! Ha Ha. Our address on Delos Drive was 26138 Delos Drive. I beleive that mom and dad moved there way before even I was born. I remember all those places you mentioned. Now what about cruising the Hermosa strand? Caravanning to parties in PV? Hanging out at Avenue I all summer long? Does anyone remember the little burger place that used to be the "hang out" and it was located right next to the end of the parking lot. I want to say it was a Fosters but I am not sure. Gosg I feel like breaking out in a rendition of "Memories"... But I will spare you for now, hehehe... Deb

From: Zack (2000) on Wed May 23 22:19:22 2001
me either, I just signed on today to read all this and I do feel like I'm being blamed here, if anyone thinks Chonk or I did this then please have the courage to come up and say "I think it was Zack or Chonk." But as you said Valerie, Byon or Byron will find out who did it and put them to death. -Valerie- er, um.... Zack, haha, just thought I'd throw you for a loop. Fools.
From: Chonk () on Wed May 23 20:51:18 2001
No, no one accused me, but Richard Weeks claimed you all have a pretty good idea who did it. I felt that was uncalled for, since there is not enough evidence to make a valid educated guess. This also implied that the most obvious suspect, me or maybe Zack, are most likely guilty. I don't appreciate this implication. Chonk Chonk
From: Valerie Burton Appleton (1981) on Wed May 23 20:04:45 2001
Actually, *few* people disagree with me, Chonk, but nevertheless, noone accused you. Noone needs to accuse anyone. I have, as I promised, made a formal complaint. Byon WILL know who made the posts... I leave it to him to handle this. Webmasters have certain legal obligations, and I'm certain this isn't going to be blown off, as Byon is very businesslike. I would hope that whoever the jackass is, they decide to start behaving in a more adult fashion. And let me state this clearly: the ONLY reason I'm addressing this issue with you is this: if you -are- innocent and didn't do this (and I'm not implying you did), it ought to concern you too. It ought to concern everyone. As I said before, you can dislike me and my views all you want, that's your perogative, stealing my identity, however, is not. It could happen to anyone here, and it's dangerous and wrong. This is an honor system Byon has set up, and I'm sure he expects us to be adult enough to use it as such. -Valerie
From: Chonk () on Wed May 23 18:12:16 2001

From: Perrius Maximus (1984) on Wed May 23 15:13:53 2001
Rich....If i'm not mistaken, I think that's "Bun Boy" (home of the world's largest thermometer) you are referring to on the route to Las Vegas, and not Bob's Big Boy. My family and I call Las Vegas home now, and I cannot say that i've seen a Bob's Big Boy out there on Hwy 15 (could be wrong!). Val don't sweat the imposter. We all know it's not you. The novelty will wear off and he/she will move on to some other doltish indulgence. Dave I think that Farrel's was always over priced. I remember my mother complaining about how much "The Pig's Trough" cost whenever my siblings and I made her take us there, and wanted to order one. Money didn't matter to me back then, though. I'll have to take a drive out to Temecula next time i'm down in the South Bay, and do the Farrel's thing with my kids.
From: Richard Weeks (1981) on Wed May 23 14:26:33 2001
Really, imposter person/people Please do not do that. Notice I said Please, I am asking you nicely to stop impersonating Val or anyone for that matter. It’s not nice nor is it a cool thing to do. Yea Val and I post a lot and like I said before please have a little patience this will all be taken care of soon and will all have our own little areas in which to post. I think you’ll be surprised to see how little the postings will be on this board in the near future. As oppose to amount of postings you will see on the hopefully new roundtable board, which Byon is going to try to create for us. Nevertheless, for now we all have to share and play nice. What would you do if Byon was pissed and decided this has gone to far and shut the site down? Who loses then? We all do and did you win? NO, you just ruined it for everyone including yourself(s). So again, PLEASE do not do that. I do not care how funny you think it is or how mad you think you are. Life’s to short for this kinda crap.
From: Valerie Burton Appleton (1981) on Wed May 23 14:02:25 2001
I am lodging a formal complaint with Byon. He can find out who is making the posts with no effort at all. It is my hope that you will receive a warning, and then be locked permanently out of the system if you violate the warning. Impersonating someone isn't funny, it's against the law. Lible and slander are serious charges. You might think it's all in fun, but it isn't. Regardless of your opinion of me (which beleive me, I couldn't care less about) you are breaking the law by doing what you are doing. I do like to talk, and yes, I like to talk a lot. If you want to make a post that says "Valerie Burton Appleton Likes to talk a lot" do so, but don't pretend you're me, you little creep.

From: Rich (1981) on Wed May 23 11:43:02 2001
KDC, ok but remembering the old stuff is part of the fun. I think your refering to the Grinder on Anza. I’m talking about the original one on PCH & Crenshaw. PM, Gemco, yup I member that place. Farrell’s ice cream parlor, got good and bad memories about that place. Had a great time each time I went there, but I saw the plane crash in front of it and that’s hard to forget and I mean I saw the plane crash. Oh, PM. There’s a Farrell’s in Temecula, I’ve been there a couple of times and took my kids & nephew Matt. He ate one of those pig things. MNB, Rocket ship Park, love that place I still go up there. As for the Bob’s big boy thing are you sure it was another school and not us? Hey I just found out there is still a Sambo’s in Santa Barbara and I know there’s a Bob’s big boy up off I-15 just above the summit on your way to Vegas. Anyone remember anything else?
From: Melissa Noble-Barron (80) on Wed May 23 11:25:33 2001
What memories! Anyone live near Rocket Ship Park(like me)? What about the time that a rival school(West,I think) put "Bob",from Bob's Big Boy restaurant, on top of one of the buildings at school- then the janitor's broke it trying to get it down and TUSD had to pay for a new one? The principal was so mad!
From: Perrius Maximus (1984) on Wed May 23 10:58:35 2001

From: KDC (1982) on Wed May 23 10:48:18 2001
I think the giant grinder is still there, I had one about a year ago. How about places that are there now, but not then. Rather than the Fosters Freeze that was there then, I would have loved the Starbucks that is there now - yes I drank coffee in high school. Anyone ever see the short-lived show 'Freaks & Geeks' - this show nailed the early 80's high school experience - absolutely nailed it.

Some of the things we were reminiscing about were the Helms truck, places we used to play like hiking behind the gates & on the bridle trails, playing in the fields. Places like Hillside Elementary, Steve's sporting goods, the Giant Grinder, All American Burger, the miniature golf course and go cart place that was on PCH just east of Crenshaw, A & W rootbeer, the little carnival thing that was where walteira park is now. Lets see what else, hummmmmmm. Oh, marine, Swedish corner restaurant, the Parasol, sambos, stuff like that. Oh and Pup & Taco. What do you remember? Thanks and have fun with this, Rich

Ok now for something funny. I went home last night and gave my daughter the Ten Rules for dating my Daughter that I posted on this board yesterday. I thought for sure she would blow a gasket and tell me how un-fair it was. Instead, I thought I was going to have to take her to the emergency room because she was laughing so hard. Well at least I know my daughter has a sophisticated sense of humor. If anyone would like a copy of the list (it’s a joke list) e-mail me and I will send you a copy. It’s pretty funny, just ask Dave.
From: Richard Weeks (1981) on Wed May 23 08:37:27 2001
You know what, that’s absolutely un-cool. I hope that who ever has stooped to stealing another’s identity steps forward and offers a public apology. I think we all have a good idea of who did it, but we will refrain from embarrassing that person. Suffice to say it was a childish, disrespectful act of a coward. I hope that you no longer post on this board; I for one do not think we need individuals like you here posting false messages. If your beef is over this posting issue, have a little patience. It’s about to be solved. Even if it were not the board is here for all SHS alumni, not just one group. Now let’s all put this behind us and move on to bigger and better things. One more thing, I’ve been accused of praising my friends during this debate, well yes I have and will continue to do so. Some of you praised a certain person for their role in this as a person that speaks their mind. Hey great, good for that person at least that person didn’t hide behind anyone. By the same token, isn’t that what Val was doing? Speaking her mind, do we have a double standard here? Is it ok for one side and not the other? THE END THIS WHOLE ISSUE IS OVER!
From: Valerie Burton Appleton (1981) on Wed May 23 06:58:34 2001
This is the first time (to the best of my knowledge) that one of you has stooped to "stealing" an identity and posting on behalf of another person, using their name. Make no mistake that Byon CAN tell exactly who who are. If it makes your childish heart gleeful to post something so stupid, go ahead, but be ready to suffer the consequences.
