Rich, haven't visited that site lately - I will go look at the new addition. I forgot if that's the site you have to pay for...

Kevin, been to classmates latley? There's a new addition. Know anything about it?
From: Debi Bishop (1972) on Tue Jul 31 16:35:34 2001
Yeah, I helped out on Operation Nepal too. Helped paint wooden cut-outs for photo ops and stuff. Remember the concert? Iron Butterfly did Inagoddadavida (I think that's how you spell it). Pretty big concert for a high school carnival, at the time. It was a really big money maker from what I heard.

Let's make it a weekend at Club med or something. Heheheh

I don't think the reunion was long enough, I didn't get to say howdy to everyone I wanted to. I guess you short change some so you can spend time with others.
From: VBA (81) on Tue Jul 31 09:03:14 2001
Cheryl- The classmate (yup, 1981) wasn't unruly, just unfriendly. Far be it from me to embarrass her publically! (I'll be dumbfounded if she attends any further reunions, however!) Many of us discussed the 25, and I think we're all in agreement that it's a good idea (and a pretty standard one, as well) and I don't think it should be informal, either, we just need to make sure the picnic follows it, as we really had a great time that afternoon. By then, everyone was re-acquainted and it was far more relaxed than the reunion itself. We had a ball.

Just wondering how Coach Bryant's farewell at Rocketship park went? How many hammies pulled if there was a game?
From: Cheryl Gros Drohan (1981) on Mon Jul 30 14:00:45 2001
Val, glad to hear that the picnic was a blast. Wish we could have been there. Lampost sounds like it was a good time had by all. Who was the unruly classmate, were they Class of 81? As I hadn't seen my family yet, they drove up to see us and spend the day. Later in the evening, we drove past my mom's old house and my Dad's. Amazing how things have changed. I thought South looked awful, what a shame. I think Monica's idea about having a 25th reunion is a great idea. I would make it a more casual family gathering though. P.S. Have you had any luck finding Andrew Grant's contact details? Gotta run, take my girls to dance class.
From: Valerie Burton Appleton (81) on Sun Jul 29 19:57:38 2001
Cheryl, it's a shame you skipped the picnic, we really had a blast. It was a great group, and a beautiful day. On the way to the park, we drove past your old house.. I thought of you and was hoping you'd show up with the kids. After the day of laughing in the sun, a big group went to Lamppost Pizza (where we encountered an unfriendly former classmate who left us all in stitches) and ate pizza, washed it down with good cold beer and laughed some more. If we DO have a 25 (and I think it's a great idea) we need to be sure to chase it with another picnic.. what a hoot! Hugs- Lori

Hi! I remember Molly's name, but didn't know her. If I hear anything re: her, I'll let you know! Have you tried the delphi forum, listed at the bottom of the first page of this site? There are a lot of people on that site that might be able to help you. Good luck!....Jerrie

Jerrie, never heard of the Poison Oak Festival....hmmmm My neighbors in Forestville belonged to a Crafts Guild in the Santa Cruz Mountains and did all the fairs inclusive of the Dickens Fair and the Fair Tour. He did leather stuff. I have been to Maui numerous time ; although it is too small for me. I thought I knew everyone in the class of 68 , but I do not recall Paul Carrion. I had friends in every circle in the class of 68. Do you know Molly McLeod. She was my girlfriend at South , she was one of the Song Queens. I had heard that she became an attorney and would love to find her, just to touch bases.
From: Jerrie (71) on Sat Jul 28 14:16:33 2001
Bill, I know Forestville! Isn't there a event called the Poison Oak festival there? I think I did a craft fair there years ago.Small town, had a blast then went to the coast. The ex lives on Maui. Did you know Paul Carrion? He graduated in 68,from South.

Jerrie : Yes, Operation Nepal was a HUGE SUCCESS !!! although, as far as the $$$$$$$$ I haven;t the foggiest where it went or who took control of it and made the ultimate determination as to it's diversion away from the children in Nepal having a school. I found out about it some time later , after having graduated and going off to college. I spent major time with Lynn and others working on it and was dissapointed to understand that all of our work and effort ultimately went to generating massive $$$$$ to an unknown. As far as Lynn.....I don't know, yeah , I rather thought he would have been in politics. Although , if it is any consolation 2 of my 4 Degrees are in Political Science. (*_,*) with warmest aloha....

Bill! This is the first time I heard about Operation Nepal funds not making it there! (Talk about slow news!)Does anyone know what happened to the money? The fair was a huge success, so there must have been a lot of money. Lynn Curtis was a VERY dynamic guy for being so young. What ever happened to him? I always expected to see his name in politics!

I did not go to South High School, but a friend of mine did. Her name was Kristin Meise. She graduated with the class of 1998. I am trying to track her down. If anyone knows how I might get into contact with Kristin, please email me. Thank you very much. :)
From: Bill (68) on Sat Jul 21 13:22:16 2001
Kelly: I remember my senior year when Lynn Curtis ( I think that is his name) was senior class president and we did the 1st ever Carnival at South. It was called " Operation Nepal" . It was a 3-day carnival with booths and food and rides and entertainment and comminutiy wide sponsership . It was initiated by the Senior Class . All the money was to be put toward building a school at the foothills of the Himalayas, where there was no school and where the children desperately needed a school. The carnival was a great success and money was generated . It was not til much later that I found out that none of the money ever got to Nepal, and that none of the children ever got to have the benefit of all of the effort that the kids at South put together and put out for them. I never did find out who got the money or why it never got to the children or the country of Nepal. A little South High history on the first ever Carnival at South that I and others worked so hard to make happen. I hope that all of the ones that followed had monetary results that went to good things. Our intentions and efforts were clearly there. We were trying to do something to change the world. aloha

From: Monica (Cilva) Root (81) on Thu Jul 19 11:11:37 2001

Thanks, Beverlie, for your message. I share those sentiments precisely. I didn't know what to expect from last night. Happily, the hospitality of the committee and the kindness of friends, past and present, reminded me of many fond yet perversely forgotten memories. (Why is it that the mind holds a greater grasp on the painful moments of one's life? Why should one need others to remind oneself of the happiness that existed alongside?) When we met again, we "Spartans" realized that we were each other's witnesses to our survival: living through the joy and the grief, the embarrassment and the pride, of nearly four decades of life. Letting go of the past, while coming to terms with its influence on life, is a great gift. Fortunately, for me, the reunion became a night not only of closure, but of new beginnings.

Ping Ding Ling ......no offense but is that name for real?????????if so has mortal combat between you and you folks ever been a consideration??????kinda likened to a boy named Sue.....when I was at South " Bubba Atkinson " would actually initiate a fist fight if anyone ever called him " Orvis " which was actually his real first name . since he wanted to kill his parents for having named him that . I got a black eye for calling him Orvis on South's basketball court for calling him by his God Given Name......it was worth it.....Orvis ended up with two black eyes and a non-functional nose...although we were the best of friends in the aftermath.....

I wanted to personally let Sherry Ruffell know how important she was to me throughout my high school years and to wish her & Mr. Ruffell a lot of happy years ahead in their retirement. You always had a loving non-judgemental approach and you helped me through a lot of tough times. You are a very special and giving person. I think I spent more time in the nurses office than most! Thank you again. Take care to you both. Beverlie Ensom

Erika - those sure are wise words coming from someone so fresh out of high school. Good for you to learn that lesson so early in life (to just be yourself...). It takes some people a long time to learn it, and some a life time... I also laugh at my past, and I try not to regret things I've done but to learn from them. I cherish and appreciate my present, and look forward to my future...

Deb, I noticed that dead grass thing in the picture on South High's web site. The photo of the quad looked so odd. I haven't been back to South High in about 12 years, and sometimes wonder if it's changed.
From: Deb (1977) on Sun Jul 8 10:32:21 2001
I must say that I am really disappointed! Why you ask? Last week my 2 brothers (both attended all 4 years and graduated from South) and I went to the school and walked around. What has happened to South High??????? The grass in the quad is either dead or there isnt any in large patches. It was always kept so nice before. There were large trash bags full, in several spots. Maybe someone needs to hire a new janitor?? hehehe. It was just disappointing to see.

Something I finally realized this last week that Ive been learning my whole life: It is better to be hated for who you are then loved for who you are not. Sometimes I wish I could go back to highschool and re-do some things, then I laugh and think about how great life is now.

Kudos to Roger Bryant! I was really fortunate to have not only taken his typing classes but was his t.a. for one year. He is such a quality man. He made high school bearable for many of us. I had the great opportunity to visit with him when there was a CIF football game at the local high school where I live (Lompoc). I, of course, sat on the visitors side. To my great surprise, Roger was sitting in the stands. We ended up talking for 3/4 of the game. He will be missed by those students that he will not be able to teach, but those of us who have had the priveledge to learn from him are truly blessed! Good Luck Roger in all that you do!

I was happy to see the message of the web page congratulating Coach Bryant on his retirement, as well as his thoughtful response. Coach Bryant helped establish soccer int he South Bay and did wonderful things for the community that brought a great deal of honor to South. However, there are five other people who retired this year who derserve thanks for the time and talent that they gave to us. each person gave a minimum of twenty years to this school. What would K-2 have been like without Mrs. Soloman's contributions and organization? How many of you have used the business skills that you learned from Mr. Carlson? Where would CSF and Academic Decathalon have been without Mrs. White's time and effort, not to mention the constitutional and election information that you may have used to navigate the confusing election of 2000? Stand up if you took Health and Driver's Ed. from Mr. Ruffel? The drivers of many states have his excellent teaching to be thankful for. Last but not least, is the lady who made sure we all had our shots, could see and hear, and took care of us when we felt sick as a dog (self-inflicted or by nature). I never knew in my wildest dreams how difficult and rewarding their jobs were until I became a teach myself. South will miss you and those of us who were privileged enough to know you are thankful to you.

Hi, Spartans: Just a note to say thanks for the SHS marquee message on your Alumni Message Board. South was and is a great school. It was my good fortune to be there for such a long time and to get to know many of you. I had a few other thoughts: first, Matt Jones is just an unforgettable person. Congratulations, Matt, on your upcoming marriage. Second, there are six other long time Spartans who retired this year. They are Walt Carlson, Dick Harris, Rich and Sherry Ruffell, Joanne Solomon and Sandy White. I think the tenure of each of them ranged from 25 years to 39 years. Third, there are more and more former Spartans who have returned to teach and/or coach at South. Just this year, at South, were the following (I'll probably forget some and some are certainly older than others). Quickly coming to mind are teachers Joe Austin, Frank Castillon, Gena Gebble, Kenny Hetman, Michelle Newman, Brian Tokuda, Jeff Tuttle and Nancy Wickstrom; and coaches Rob Spencer(BVB), Daniel Spencer (BVB), Noel Doumerc (BVB),Josh Waybright (FB), Jeff Joyner (BSoc), Ken Hall (Wres), Justin Hall (Wres), Megan Butacan (GBsk), Paul Angelone (BSoc), and Kevin VanWaardenburg (BB). To conclude, thanks to all of you who called or sent me notes. With all of the former Spartans who have returned to our great school, how can it not continue to be a terrific place. Aloha.

INTERNATIONAL NEWS: Mr.Roger Bryant will retire Friday, June 22, after 36 years of coaching South Soccer. He produced 3 CIF championships, 8 finals appearances, 36 All-CIF players (one being me), 8 All-Americans, 7 Player of the Year awards and made the South Bay a soccer power in the 70's and 80's! His career record was 366-96-49. I was fortunate enough to coach under Roger as the JV coach for 5 years and Varsity coach for 2 years with Jeff Tuttle who I also coached and who will become the new athletic director! For those who are interested there is a great article on DailyBreeze.com I would like to express my deepest gratitude to Mr. Bryant who gave me the opportunity to coach a great tradition at South. An experience I will never forget and which has helped me to succeed in so many ways in my life. Finally, still one of the highlights in my life to this day was winning the Damien Tournament and the South Tournament back-to-back in 1981-82. Two 32-team tournaments and number 1 in CIF for a record 20 straight weeks!! THANK YOU MR. BRYANT!

Hey folks VBA & I are looking for Michael (Mike) Hosino, if anyone knows how to get in touch with him please let us know. Last time I saw him was during the Gulf war, he was working at Torrance Memorial Hospital at the time. For that matter, anyone talk to, seen or know how to get ahold of John Lee, Jon Stevenson, or Greg Blomsted. I would like to make sure they know about the reunion. Get excited boys and girls, four more weeks.
