Oh wow, the Parasol restraunt. What memories. We lived 3 houses doen from the park, Alta Loma, on the hill. I remember before it was a park and we would pack lunches and go hiking in the field ALL day long. I always wanted to go see the horses that were there brfore the golf course but was always afraid of getting shot with rock salt by Mr. Chandler who owned all that fenced off propery.

Serg,
This site is for people who are graduates of South High School in North America not South Afica. My answer to your question about doing business in Russia is, "NO WAY! Not at this time. The fall of communism is too recent and the countries are not stable yet". The company I work for sells the worlds top of the line custom jets to individuals, governments, and corporations in just about every country in the world. We've recently sold a number of custom jets to the wealthiest people in Russia. As a mechanical engineer and upfront designer I do the custom interior design which the level one client must approve and signoff on. Therefore I get a fairly descent feel for the business climate in Russia. My gut feeling is that the corruption is wide spread and rampant. You could have a successful business confiscated from you without any legitimate legal reason at any time by the government or other powers to be. Within in one week after we delivered a brand new custom jet to the wealthiest man in Russia, president Valdimir Putin had him arrested and basically caused him and 5 other billionaire associates of his into near bankrupcy. The most likely reason was for the mere possibilty that they were supporting a democratic politcal party that would be an opposition to Putin's presidency. That's just one example. But if you are a good welder come to America. I've worked with other Russian immigrants and got along great with them. I grew up during the cold war with the Soviet Union and find it enlightning that the average citizens of both countries would make wonderful neighbors and friends as I have found with my Russian immigrant coworkers. If our governments could respect each other and work together the world could be a much safer place for all.

If I remember correctly, the old Torrance High Football field was on the South East side of the campus?
The new stadium moved across Del Amo and there is an elemetary school there...called Torrance Elementary.

From: Max S. (1960) on Tue Mar 29 20:55:57 2005
A bit more South High ancient trivia. When we started out as South High in the Fall of 1957, we attended classes in an old elemantary school adjacent to the Torrance High football stadium. (Is it still there?) In early 1958 the Freshmen and Sophomores in the South High district attended South High at its present site; the Juniors went to North High; and, the Seniors were still attending Torrance High! All neighbors, often from the same family.

Joni...glad to see you back! You know, its so hard to be in a hospice-nurse situation, but you are an angel on earth for doing it. You are right, its better than putting family into a cold facility, and Karmically correct. Try to remember that good things do come, sometimes its just not on our time schedule. I helped my family when my Dad was Dying, and while it was the hardest thing I've ever done, it was the most rewarding and most RIGHT thing to do. The lessons that come along with the situation will carry you thru your life, so hang in there. Rewards WILL come! One lottery ticket a week....Hey, it COULD happen! (I'm rootin' for ya!)

Bill,
Great idea. Sad to say, but it won't work for me. I retired about 5 years ago due to a disability. The good news is that I have been able to use my previous work experience within my own family. The better news is that I moved back to the "old homestead" after my divorce 9 years ago. The bad news is that I was a hospice nurse. I guess it's better to care for your own family instead of trusting strangers in a cold facility, but it isn't any easier. Maybe I'll win tbe lottery and become independently wealthy.

Joni,
I went to and graduated from Meadow Park Elementary School in 1964, and at that time I too used to fly kites where the homes are now adjacent to and south of Lomita, which was not there at the time. My mom still lives on 232nd and your right about the property values, as they bought a 2 story 4bdrm / 2 ba. home which was built in 1960 for $31,000.00 and now it's in the $875,000.00 market value. It's a hell of a market!!! But that applies to the whole South Bay area or Southern Calif as a whole, I have three homes in the Norco / Corona cities and the market is great. I will only buy in So. Cal. and here, I just had an appraisal finalize on one of the houses here that I bought last year February for $482,700.00 that is now at $680,000.00 or + 197 K, so it's time to re- fi and pick up another one over here, to continue to catch the market.
My recommendation= buy real estate that is turnkey and capable of paying for itself or closely thereof, don't sell, but continue to collect and buy and let em all appreciate. It beats banks, money market accounts, IRA's , Keoghs, stocks, bonds, or most anything else . Plus it provides tax writeoffs, but most of all radical appreciation and increase in relative worth/ value= having things pay for themselves and build the equity to continue to buy one or two per year.. It's a hell of a retirement plan that you will be able to value in millions. But what the hell do I know?

for what it's worth................

Bill68: Thank you for the additional piece of information. Now I know a bit more about my house than I did before. I remember some of the fuss about Black families moving into the area, but I never understood WHY it was such a big deal(kids don't see color)
I remember the HUGE field that was behind my house. It was off Lomita and 230th Place. I used to fly kites there until they built the "new" tract of houses. After that, it was Meadow Park. Things seemed so much better then. I live in a house worth about 750 grand. It was bought for about 30 grand. My, how times have changed.

From: Bill (68) on Sat Feb 26 21:51:28 2005
Joni, the homes on Anza Ave and on Calle Mayor perhapse were built in the 50's BUT everything else around it and adjacent to it's field and campus was Don Wilson's " Southwood Homes " ; which started at the intersection of Anza and Calle Mayor and wrapped arount to Ocean Avenue, on the East and then went to about 100 yards from Pacific Coast Highway and also ran from the intersectionof Calle Mayor and Anza and ran south to about 100 yards from Pacific Coast Highway, while additionally running west from those points to the back side of the field and tennis courts, baseball fields at South High. The Southwood Home Tracts made National TV News in 1960 because Don Wilson refused to sell to a black family which brought in the NAACP, Daily TV News coverage, Picketing by the NAACP, and had the entire houseing tract continually blocked off by police at every entrance, so the only way you could go in or out was by proving that you lived there. The police and city of Torrance sent flyers to homeowners asking them not to shoot the blacks, fire guns at the , hose them down, or get into fights with them....The overall outcome of the whole thing was the " Rumsford Fair Housing Act " , in the end the NAACP put money together and had a home purchased for a black family, and the rest is history, we used to ride skateboards down to see the picketing at the Model Homes, and watch the whites on one side of the street harassing the black picketers on the other side of the street with the police trying to keep things civil. It was one of the 1st Civil Rights Issues in the South Bay.......

little bit of South High trivia.

Prior to the Southwood tract of homes all that land used to be Strawberry Fields, and when it would rain the fields would fill up and this old guy would give boat rides on the water. We used to have friends who lived on Anza just a block north of the intersection of Calle Mayor and Anza, so we used to go there for years from when I was about 4 ; which was six years before 1960.

or was that 1060

From: Bill (68) on Sat Feb 26 21:35:15 2005
Yes , Bruce ......1060 was a good year

The Moodbidri manuscripts (scribed around 1060 AD) represent the oldest known written ... the leadership of Mahatma Gandhi.

Jewish commercial law was written as early as 1060 AD in Europe - the Uniform Commercial Code

other than that going on it was to be:

THE ADVENT OF THE TURKS, 1059-1185, 126 years

1060 AD -- Romanian territory is intact, but the military and financial foundations of Roman power have been undermined. The coinage is debased for the first time since Constantine. Resources have been wasted absorbing Armenia, and the forces of the Armenian themes have been disbanded. Local Islamic states are no threat, but the Seljuks are on the way.

AND BESIDES THAT :

IT WAS THE 1ST YEAR OF SOUTH HIGH SCHOOL

Hell that makes us older than dirt, brah !!!

From: Bruce '67 ('67) on Sat Feb 26 09:50:29 2005
If you look at the top of these page you will see a listing of the years of graduation, looks like Soulth started in 1060. South was built in bad ground area. Alot of the houses were built in neighborhoods/tracks. The last one to go up were on Ocean south of Lomita and east of Anza. That was around '62 to '64. Anza never reached PCH, Ocean stopped at Lomita, and then again at 234th. The grounds that all these houses are on is very expandable and needs to be kept wet. If it drys out it shrinks, it will crack a foundation.

South High was established in either 1956 or 1957. If you haven't figured it out yet, what is now South High used to be a swampland. Most of the houses built in the South High area were built in the mid 1950's, and because the area is essetially a lake bottom, most of the houses have long cracks on the inside due to "settling". Did you ever wonder why they call Lago Seco park by that name? It means "Dry Lake." Okay, little one, class is closed. I hope I was of some help, and I'm sorry to be so long-winded

Cerria Tatum (2007), Take a walk into the office and look at all of the plaques on the wall. There is a lot of history there. The main entry to the boy's gym used to have (unknown if it is still the same way) a trophy case of many of the trophies won by the various sports as well as the banners that should be hanging inside of the gym. The girls gym also has (or had) a similar trophy case for the girls sports. Take a walk around your school and get to know it. 2007 will come sooner than you think.

Bruce, Yes new Jowell quiet well in the old days, him and his brother Monk. Last time I saw him ~80 he was in Lomita and trying to get to San Pedro to see Greg Melwing. Didn't know he went to the islands. Try the Delphi South page for you ol girlfriends. Sometimes they pop up there. Talk to Jerri or proudfoot , they seem to be able to trace people

Bill A. So Ray P thinks he can afford to move from Gardena to Hawaii. Tell him good luck. Knew Kit Foyle from South didn't realize he was there, Rick Irons was a legend to our age group for his surfing skills.(crile he went to Viet Nam along with Monk) Heard he is a minister now. Nephews are world champs...I knew their dad Phil Irons back at Torrance Beach. Hap still shapes boards off of Admore in Hermosa, open door anyone can still walk it a talkie. Becker is next door and Rick's son shapes paddleboards in the same area.

Jerrie, I was reading this article about a teenage kit who built a crude nuclear reactor in his perents backyard shed. This kid was obsessed with chemistry and was constantly blowing up his room with his experiments. His parents finally moved him outside. I worked with a guy like this who actually blew his hand off making rocket fuel in his bedroom. Here is a small exert from the story I was reading that goes along with what we've been talking about.

What is a breeder reactor? This simplistic description comes from a publication that David obtained from the Department of Energy (DOE): "Imagine you have a car and begin a long drive. When you start, you have half a tank of gas. When you return home, instead of being nearly empty, your gas tank is full. A breeder reactor is like this magic car. A breeder reactor not only generates electricity, but it also produces new fuel."

All reactors, conventional and breeder, rely on a critical pile of a naturally radioactive element--typically uranium-235 or plutonium-239--as the "fuel" for a sustained chain of reactions known as fission. Fission occurs when a neutron combines with the nucleus of a radioisotope, say uranium-235, transforming it into uranium-236. This new isotope is highly unstable and immediately splits in half, forming two smaller nuclei, and releasing a great deal of radiant energy (some of which is heat) and several neutrons. These neutrons are absorbed by other uranium-235 atoms to begin the process again.

A breeder reactor is configured so that a core of plutonium-239 is surrounded by a "blanket" of uranium-238. When the plutonium gives off neutrons, they are absorbed by the uranium-238 to become uranium-239, which in turn decays by emitting beta rays and is transformed into neptunium-239. Following another stage of "radioactive decay," neptunium becomes plutonium-239, which can replenish the fuel core.

Hello All, does anyone know where I might find Beverly Morrow class of '68 or '69?
Also, I see a class reunion for class of '65. I haven't been to one in over 20 years. Is there something going on for class of '67?

From: Ross Gardner (65) on Sat Feb 5 20:13:34 2005
The current existing class of 65 reunion committee is comprised of Rhonda Beckman, Betty Campisi and myself. The 40th reunion is set for Saturday August 27th at the Embassy Suites in Anaheim/Garden Grove on Harbor Blvd. just south of Chapman Avenue near Disneyland. We would like all that are interested in attending to please respond ASAP so we can get an accurate 'head' count for the hotel. There will not be set up to pay at the door nor will anyone be admitted that hasn't paid (no more thinking, not showing for dinner is ok reason not to pay) There will be an informal reception for the early birds on Friday night in the Atrium. The hotel is 14 stories and the center is the atrium for those not familiar with the Embassy Suites design. We are still looking; 1. for people 2. suggestions for Friday, Sat,-day and Saturday night. The cost right now is $75 per person and after May 1st it goes up to $95 due to our commitment to the hotel. Please feel free to contact me at ross.terri@verizon,net or telephone - 562-494-1276 Hope to hear from several of you soon. Let's have a great reunion. Ross Gardner

Chris, my sincere condolances to you and your family on the loss of your Dad.
My heart goes out to you and yours my friend. I played in Pacific Coast Little League and in Babe Ruth League and remembered all the help from the dads that didn't have some excuse to be elsewhere. When I lived in Norco, Cal prior to moving here , my two boys played ball and I coached Little League for 11 years and Soccar for 11 years and it was some of the best time I ever spent doing anything on earth. I honor your father for having been totally involved in that part of your life and the lives of our friends and even those who we never knew..May he be with God.
with warmest aloha brah...

Was I out of tune??? Just thought it comical that one could be going with someone for 11 months without having gotten to the point if comsumating the relationship,,,so that it would take that long to figure out that your girlfriend wasn't a Sheila, as Crocodile Dundee would put it....

I remeber Kevin Thill once when we were going to college up north spending major $$$$ and time one night trying to hustle someone he said was a " babe " and my girlfriend and I were trying to tell him that she was a he, but he told us to buzz off, so he proceeds to get them both seriously hammered and takes her home, he had a room in our house and what a ruckus in the middle of the night when he discovered just what kind of babe he'd landed.....took him a long time to live it down....

Chris,

My belief is that your father's good works is merely the expression of a wondeful essence. That essence exists as strong as ever, and lets you know that fact by stirring corresponding feelings of love, joy, and tears within all who knew him. Just read Bill M's post for a tangible reminder that the heartache cannot obscure the eternity of a good man.

Let me tell a little about Chris J's Dad. He was there at the beginning of Den 7 Cub Scout troop 656. It's too bad he did so much for the Pacific Coast Little league when Riveria League was much better. Just the draw of the boundry lines. But he put in long hours at Kissel field. He did more than his share to help the kids of Newton, most dads had some type of excuse. I haven't seen him or his wife in years, but I still have fond memories from my experiences with them. It was just a shame that you lived so far away...seemed to take hours to get to your house to mine.

Homeland Security Agents Visit Toy Store

Homeland Security Agents Visit Small Toy Store in Oregon About Magic Cube

The Associated Press
ST. HELENS, Ore. Oct 28, 2004 — So far as she knows, Pufferbelly Toys
owner Stephanie Cox hasn't been passing any state secrets to sinister
foreign governments, or violating obscure clauses in the Patriot Act.

So she was taken aback by a mysterious phone call from the U.S.
Department of Homeland Security to her small store in this quiet
Columbia River town just north of Portland.

"I was shaking in my shoes," Cox said of the September phone call. "My
first thought was the government can shut your business down on a whim,
in my opinion. If I'm closed even for a day that would cause undue
stress."

When the two agents arrived at the store, the lead agent asked Cox
whether she carried a toy called the Magic Cube, which he said was an
illegal copy of the Rubik's Cube, one of the most popular toys of all
time.

He told her to remove the Magic Cube from her shelves, and he watched
to make sure she complied.

After the agents left, Cox called the manufacturer of the Magic Cube,
the Toysmith Group, which is based in Auburn, Wash. A representative
told her that Rubik's Cube patent had expired, and the Magic Cube did
not infringe on the rival toy's trademark.

Virginia Kice, a spokeswoman for Immigration and Customs Enforcement,
said agents went to Pufferbelly based on a trademark infringement
complaint filed in the agency's intellectual property rights center in
Washington, D.C.

"One of the things that our agency's responsible for doing is
protecting the integrity of the economy and our nation's financial
systems and obviously trademark infringement does have significant
economic implications," she said.

Six weeks after her brush with Homeland Security, Cox told The
Oregonian she is still bewildered by the experience.

"Aren't there any terrorists out there?" she said.
